Having problems clearing room for a new chain when my drive is full.

Thread needs solution

The data on my PC takes up about 1.5 TB.  I back this up to a 4TB external drive.  It has worked well for me for the first two cycles, but now I am a bit confused about how ATI2018 "clears up" space on the drive to make room for a new backup set (especially the initial large full backup).

On the 4TB external I have two complete backup sets (I THINK these are called chains) and they are fine; however, when it comes time to start a new chain there is no room for the initial backup and my backup fails.

To correct this problem it is clear that the first set/chain needs to be deleted leaving room for just the second set/chain and the new full backup.

This is where I am confused.

After I realized I had this problem I went into Options|Backup Scheme and change the setting to store no more than one recent version chain.

At this point it would seem to me, and this is what I want it to do, that the first chain/set would AUTOMATICALLY be deleted to make way for the new set.  Right now this is not happening.

Can somebody suggest what setting I need to add or change so that this oldest set does in fact get deleted to make room for the new chain?  It seems to me that as long as the middle/second chain is not deleted then I am safe with a full backup if the first were to be deleted and the third were to fail.

Thanks in advance for any advice or suggestions,

Rich

PS: I have attached four screenshots that might be helpful.

PS: I am using ATI2018 on a Windows 10 - 64 PC.

Rich, for this situation you will need to manually delete files to make space.  You could try either to delete all the _b2_ files shown in your screen image, or could just delete the _inc_b2_ incremental files leaving just the initial _full_b2_ if that would give you sufficient free space to make a new full backup?

After doing any manual file deletions, you should perform a Validation for this backup task then take the Ignore option for each popup message given for a deleted file - this will then reconcile the internal Acronis Database that tracks the files for a task.

ATI 2019 (currently in Beta testing) is introducing a new cleanup tool to help with this type of situation but that is for the future at present.

Steve,

Thanks for the quick response.

I TRIED to delete the set b2 from the backup drive but when I try I get a new issue....

When I click to delete the set of files from the b2 set I get two different permission notifications (images attached) and am not allowed to delete the files.  :-(

Do you know of a remedy for this or is it a Windows issue?

Thank you,

Richard

Rich, sorry, I should have picked up on you being on ATI 2018 with Acronis Active Protection, as this will stop you from deleting .tib files if it is active.

You should have a new icon in the system tray area at the bottom of the display, blue shield with A in centre, right click on the icon then Turn off AAP while you delete the files, then turn it back on again.

Hmmmm.  I don't see the icon down there.  Any suggestions?

See attached screen shot.

Rich, I still suspect that AAP is getting involved here but there should be a system tray icon for this though there have been times when it has disappeared until after a reboot etc.

In the main ATI 2018 GUI, check the status of AAP on the dedicated page for this.

I disabled Active Protection and was able to delete the old backup set.  I guess I will leave Active Protection in the OFF position whenever I want to delete and old backup chain.  Kind of an annoyance but I can live with it.

Like you suggested, maybe the next version will address this issue.

Thank you for the troubleshooting help!

So this morning I check on the backup and find that the new chain has started; however, there are no other chains there.

I manually deleted the oldest of the two that were there which left the newest chain on the drive.  Now apparently ATI2018 has created the new full backup and has deleted the previous chain.

I do not know if it created the new chain BEFORE it deleted the old one (preferred) or if deleted the old set before it created the new full backup (not preferred).

I would have liked to have ended up with last nights new full backup and the previous chain still intact.  I can't figure out what I am doing wrong.  Any suggestions?

Thank you.

Rich, earlier you wrote:

Your screen image shows that this is exactly what you have.  The oldest version chains were deleted after this latest new chain was started with the new full image file.

To store just one recent version chain, your backup drive needs sufficient space to hold a minimum of two full backup image files (plus all associated incremental files for one of these).

If you want to store two recent version chains, then the drive needs sufficient space to hold three full backup image files, plus two sets of incremental files...

Thanks Steve.  As long as the new image file is created before the old chain is deleted then I am content.

I thank you again for all of  your help with this.
