Clone XP from HDD to SSD - SSD extremely SLOW

So I wanted to clone my work hard drive to a new SSD to speed things up. The old hard drive was an 80 Gig SATA drive. In windows I ran Acronis TI 2010, and selected to clone the drive and selected the HDD as the source and the SSD as the target. Windows prompted for a reboot to clone and then proceeded to clone the drive successfully.

Upon reboot, the SSD loads windows EXTREMELY slow. I mean like it was loading from a floppy disk. Dunno maybe 15 minutes to get through the loading screen. I gave up after a while waiting for the login to give me a responsive desktop.

That's odd, but this is even odder. I tried it again today with the idea of doing a FIX MBR or some other XP repair console command. But the first time it rebooted, it worked flawlessly. XP loaded super fast and everything was nice and responsive as an SSD should be. Upon reboot, it was back the way it was before. :(

I tried the setup with both drives in, with only the SSD drive in, switching SATA ports. Nothing seems to make the SSD behave correctly.

Is this possibly the alignment issue I've read about? I don't understand then how it could work once though if that was the case.

I tested just using the regular HDD as the system disk again, and left the SSD clone in there in addition. So the clone has everything the SSD does. Running things off the SSD work great this way. Copying files on the SSD behave exactly as expected (took 3+ minutes to copy a 2.5 Gig VHD file on the HDD, while the SSD version was under 50 seconds.)

So I would assume then that the system can work the SSD ok as it works ok as a secondary drive. What could cause the EXTREME slowness when it's the system drive?

Had I known the SSD would work only that one time, I probably would have played with it more, as my main point was just to see what sort of performance boost I would get doing my work (I'm a java developer.)

Does anybody have any pointers? This seems like a pretty common scenario for anyone wanting to upgrade an existing HDD to an SSD.

Did you ever get this resolved?

Definitely an alignment issue that would halve the speed of your SSD. You must fix this to get the benefits of your SSD.
