Restoring just MBR

Thread needs solution

Hi. My system appears to have become unstable and I can't seem to mount the volume - I have tried booting in safe mood on Windows 7 (64 bit) but when the system loads classpnp.sys it just goes to a blue screen and I get a message saying unbootable volume.

So here's my question.

I know that I can restore just the MBR from a backup set rather than the entire volume - I last backed up three weeks ago so if I can I'd prefer not to lose three weeks worth of data. My back ups are contained on a external USB drive, but when I select restore MBR only, I am given two options to select as a TARGET... one is on my USB drive and the other is on my system that won't boot.

Any idea which one I need to select in order to over-write my current MBR? I don't want to select the wrong option by mistake, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,

Mike

The MBR a system disk section, so that is the one you want to restore to -- i.e., from your backup file to the system disk, the one that won't boot. HOWEVER, I would make a file mode backup of all the data files first! That way if anything goes wrong and yuo have to rstore the entire disk, you can then restore the data files and remain up-to-date. To do this, use the ati BootCD.

NOte that the MBR might not be the problem, it could be a hardware prob or a corrupt hardware driver or some other system file. If it was me, I'd backup the data and then try either a windows repair or else restore a prior backup (whole disk) and then resotre the data files. In fact the latter will probably be the fastest.

If you can't boot even with the bootcd, then you likely have a hardware problem.
