Restore wrecked the system, ATI Home 2010
Hello,
I made Image Backups of a Vista system on an externel USB Drive and allways felt save in case of Emergency.
But when I needed it (only to restore problems with the internet explorer - the system still was OK), I started restore. After restore was complete I got the message "Restore not possible because of changed Soft- or Hardware".
Start of system was not possible anymore. So I used the rescue CD.
Restore startet and at the end I got the same message again.
But Soft- or Hardware was not changed.
Between newest image and restore was only 1/2 hour!
Why do I get this message?
How can I recover the system?
Can I have done something wrong?
What happened?
Should I better remome Acronis from my own Computers and all of my customers?
Thanks for an answer from Acronis !
regards
Helge

Hello Yana,
thanks for your reply.
The installation of the newest version of ATI Home 2010 is only a few months old.
This happened on a Dell Studio 1737 Notebook last weekend.
Since my customer didn't have the time to wait he upgraded from Vista 32 to W7, 64 (fresh installation).
I installed Acronis again (and checked for updates), but I'm afraid this can happen again.

Dear Helge!
Thank you for specifying that the issue occurred with the Dell machine!
Actually the new drivers are added to the custom medias once in 2 weeks, so dependless on the release date, we continue updating the ISOs, and the downloaded version can contain the drivers that aren't present in the build itself.
We also have a Custom Media for Dell machines, you may want to check its functionality as well. I will send you the link for it in a minute via PM.
Should the issue remain anyway, please send us the diagnostic information requested here. This data will help us to build a new custom ISO for you.
Should you have any additional questions or concerns, please share them with us, we will be glad to help you!
Thank you!

Dear Yana,
thanks for your reply.
I downloaded the .iso and will burn it.
But I don't dare to use it on a running system!
My customer would hang me, if the system would break down again (remember, we moved to W7).
Is there a way to test if the recovery would work, before the real recovery starts?
I myself have a Dell Server and a few Dell machines. I sold a lot Acronis Products to customers with different PC Systems.
How can I test recovery before Damage happens?

Hello,
how can I test if the Acronis Software is compatible with the hardware before starting recovery?

One of the first steps would be to boot from the TI Rescue Cd and perform a validation of some of the backups created in Windows. The CD is the restore vehicle so it is the CD which must pass judgement on the quality of the backup.
After restoration, try using the Explore or Mount options and try copying some of the backup files onto another of your disk drives.
And the very best way is to have a spare hard drive and resstore a backkup on the spare and see if the spare will boot.
If you do choose this route, there are some restore guidelines you should follow.
There is an unofficial rule which many of us follow--which is
Never ruin a working drive unless you have PROVEN (in advance) that you will be able to recover the spoiled drive should something happen to spoil the restore.

Hello,
> One of the first steps would be to boot from the TI Rescue Cd
which I did
> After restoration try using the Explore or Mount options
After restoration nothings works anymore. There is only the message "Hardware or Software has changed".
Therefore I would like to check before Image restoring.
For Test I started True Echo Workstation 2009, the GERMAN version on a different computer.
Under which Menu do I find "Explore or Mount" ?
> and try copying some of the backup files onto another of your disk drives.
copying/restoring of certain files is no problem.
But the image restore made the system corrupt on the Dell computer.
Windows didn't boot anymore.
> And the very best way is to have a spare hard drive and resstore a backkup on the spare and see if the spare will boot.
It works on the spare drive, but still this is no proof the image backup will work on the original computer (and it didn't).
Pls remember the Message: "Hard- or Software has changed".
> Never ruin a working drive unless you have PROVEN (in advance) that you will be able to recover the spoiled drive should something happen to spoil the restore.
I had three image backups. None of them worked.
You are saying it. I want to prove in advance.
But your tips are worthless.
I am seeking for a conclusion to test the restore ability on the original harddrive and computer, BEFORE doing the image restore.

I can only think of two possible ways.
1. Insert a spare hardrive of the same capacity and specifications and restore to that.
2. Possibly convert the tib to a VHD file and attach it to the startUp manager, and see if the system can boot from it.
If there are still problems, another possibilty that would require more fiddling, would be to only restore the images as partitions rather than complete disk drives. This would of course require a way of reproducing a Dell MBR if a new non Dell supplied disk was used.

Hello Colin,
well this is very vague.
Which customer is doing that?
This seems to be a Lottery.
Make Imagebackups for a long time and feel safe.
When you need the Image you play roulette.
Black or red - maybe it works - maybe not.
This happened to my customer.
I wont recommend Acronis anymore....
Bye
