Making bootable disc backup

Thread needs solution

Acronis 2011 on 64 bit windows.

I would like to make a bootable backup of my hard drive which contains two partitions. The First is an HP Recovery partition and the second contains the operating system and my programs and files. When I try to make a whole disc backup the make backup bootable option is "grayed" out and I can not do so. How do I make a backup which is bootable.

Second: To be able to recover files individually do I have to make a files backup or can I pick them individually out of a disc backup?

Knew how to do this on old computer with 2010. To my regret that computer dies and I now have to deal with an HP conputer configured as abovee and running Windows 7 x64.

Hello Gary,

Thank you for posting. I will definitely help you with your questions.

The reason the bootable option is grayed out can be caused by several things. You have not selected a bootable device as a backup destination or, the bootable device uses another interface such as e-sata for example. Currently, the following devices can be used to create a bootable backup - USB stick, BD, and DVD. It also very likely the external drive has NTFS file system, which in light of recent findings makes this option disabled.

You can definitely recover individual files from a disk backup. There are several ways that you can use:

 - From Windows provided that the program is installed:

1. Double click on the disk backup .tib file and navigate to the file/folder that you want to extract. Select the file, right click on it and select copy. You can then paste it to a new location on your computer.

2. You can mount the disk backup file and create a virtual hard drive on your computer, from which you can copy/paste the files. There is a detailed guide available here.

 - From Windows or the bootable media:

3. You can also select the files you need to recover from the disk backup by using the Acronis Backup Explorer. From the main program menu right click on the required backup, select Explore and Recover. Select the Files and folder tab and by pressing the arrow keys you can expand the backup contents and using checkboxes you can select which filed you would like to restore. After selecting the required files, press on the Recover button and select where you would like to recover the files. You can also perform the sames steps from the bootable media.

You can also check our user guide in Chapter 4 on page 74 for more detailed recovery instructions.

Just in case, you can always access Acronis True Image 2011 Home web-help section from this link.

If you have additional questions please let me know.

Thank you.

Let me be clear on this. I do not want the backup itself to boot. What I want is this: If I do a bare metal restore from the backup, I want the hard drive itself to boot after it is restored Same if I have had to put a new hard drive in my machine as the old one failed.

Thank you..

Gary,

If you do a regular disk/partition backup of your *entire* normal boot disk, this image can be used later to restore your system on the same disk or a new disk. By default and essence, this type of backup is what you call a bootable backup.

Making the disk where your backup is stored bootable is another question, but it doesnt seem to be yours here.
