Patrick, welcome to these public User Forums.

Sorry but I am not aware of the green check marker on desktop icons and haven't seen this for any of my systems that I can recall?

(It may be that I am colour blind but any marker on my desktop icons are those showing the icons are shortcuts only).

Patrick, the green checkmarks are related to OneDrive synchronization. A solution that has worked for many is to simply right-click on an empty area of the desktop and select refresh.

If that fails, do a google search and you will find other suggestions (e.g. deleting the icon cache).

Agreed - OneDrive is at play.  You can change how OneDrive synch by folder/file after right-clicking them too.
