Cleanup so 1TB backup disk does not fill and backup doesn't fail

Thread solved

Running Acronis 2019, build 17750. Settings are shown in one image and backup files in another. I have a 1TB backup disk. I want to know what settings I need to ensure that I can have an incremental backup with settings that will automatically clean up so that the disk does not fill and so that the backup does not fail because it ran out of disk space.

Tim, from your screen image of the current backup files, I would allow about 250GB per each complete backup version chain, i.e. a full plus 5 incremental files.

This means that you have space on your 1TB drive to store 3 x 250GB = 750GB of files in 3 such version chains (assuming it is only used for this one task), plus have headroom to start a further new full backup for a 4th chain being started (about 210GB) at which point ATI automatic cleanup will free up the oldest backup chain by deleting 250GB of files.

I would recommend changing your settings by deselecting the option to 'Do not delete the first version of the backup' and using 'Store no more than 3 recent version chains' instead of to keep the size to 650GB.

If you want to keep that oldest .tib file, then copy it to another drive and keep it offiline.

I've rounded up the figures above (to 250GB) so you may find you have some extra space available as your actual chains vary between 220 - 235GB in size, but this allows for any large changes due to an OS update etc.

Note: the option to keep the size below a specified value has disappeared in ATI 2020 due to the change in file architecture from .tib to .tibx, so worth getting used to not having it before any future upgrade to a later version of ATI.

Hi Steve,

Exactly the answer I was looking for, thank you!

Tim
