How to run a Backup profile when a specific external drive is plugged-in?

Thread solved

I have a USB backup drive letter T: that is connected all the time and gets backups using Acronis' scheduling method. Is there a way to set-up a profile so that when I plug-in another drive, say that is labelled W:, Acronis automatically sees it and runs the correct backup profile on it?

This seems like something ATI ought to do and yet I don't see how to accomplish it?

Tom, this option is available via the Scheduling settings for a backup task.

You will need to create a new backup task while you have the other external USB drive connected to the computer, and set all the desired backup configuration settings for the task.

On the Schedule page, use the Schedule upon event option in the left side list then on the right side, decide if the task should be run just 'Once a day only' and select 'When an external device is connected'.  Note: if you do not select 'Once a day only', the task will run every time the device is connected.

See the ATI 2020 User Guide: Upon event execution parameters

Thanks Steve, seems like it oughta work, but plugging-in the W: drive does not start the backup process. Maybe it is because the "backup-to" folder has a full backup in it from earlier in the day when I first started fiddling with it, and ATI thinks it is done for today. Will see if it works tomorrow.

BTW I dunno how this got put into the Off Topic folder!? I started it from ATI2019...

OK I plugged-in the W: drive this morning and it did commence to make the backup. So apparently despite that I'd made a backup using a "first attempt" profile, a profile I later Deleted in favor of Steve's suggestions, the new profile must have seen that backup and thus refused to automagically make another yesterday.

I'm a little surprised that there is absolutely no indication anywhere on my Windows UI that the backup is proceeding, only the ker-blinken of the external drive activity LED. I set an email notification to help reassure me...

Thank you Steve for your help, and to you (or whomever) got this thread moved to the right place in the forum!

Tom, there should be an Acronis icon in the system tray area of the Windows task bar when any backup task is running but this will also depend on your notifications settings for task bar icons.

Hi Steve, well the Acronis icon is always there in my tray, but...it seems to be solely about Active Protection and doesn't give any indications about backups in process. A look at my Window "Notification Area Icons" doesn't show any other Acronis items than that one.

Tom, there definitely should be a second Acronis icon shown in the system tray when any backup task is active / running.

Above is what I see when manually launching one of my backup tasks, showing the AAP and normal ATI system tray icons.

If you are not seeing this, then you may need to consider the options given in KB 60915: Acronis True Image: repairing program settings - to see if this will correct the issue.

Squinting hard at your taskbar pic trying to see an "activity" icon--are you talking about the BW one with the A in the middle of it? I don't see your blue AAP icon, which for my 2019 installation is in the shape of a shield.

I suppose you are using ATI 2020 while I am still using 2019, but...why would they change icons?

This is all I've ever seen in my tray from ATI:

Tom, sorry about the mix up with the system tray icons for ATI 2020 instead of 2019 - put it down to a 'senior moment' on my part.  The AAP icon has changed in 2020 to the black & white squares with the 'A' on a white background.  The ATI backup progress icon remains the same as it has been for some years (blue square with white arrow).

Another screen image below for ATI 2019 showing the correct icons for that version with a backup in progress.

AAP is the blue shield with white 'A', and the ATI backup progress to the right with the pointer under it.

Good grief Steve, there it is, the blue squares with the arrow inside. How could I not have noticed that before!? Too bad it is not animated like e.g. my Resilio Sync tray icon.

I apologize for the bandwidth, and must express to you again (as I hope I have before) what an invaluable resource you are providing here to us Acronis users who are just not "into it" every day and so don't understand it all that well.

Thank you!!!!

p.s. for the record I like the 2019 "badge" or "shield" AAP icon better!!! :-)

p.p.s. I'm sure I am way older than you! Senior moments are the only ones I have!

Tom, glad to have been able to help as it all keeps the 'little grey cells' active as Poirot likes to say!

Ref the AAP icon change, this has been repurposed in ATI 2020 to provide a list of recent actions related to ATI with no real reference to AAP anymore - you have to open the main GUI to the AAP page to make changes such as to Turn AAP on or off.

There have been lots of mixed feelings about the change to the above!

I have actually run Acronis since the very early days of their existence, so have witnessed an amazing number of UI changes over the years. I can't deny that it drives me a little crazy that they tinker with it all the time, but as a capitalist I know they need to keep making changes in order to inspire upgrade purchases as well as new sales.

Along with the tinkering come bugs of course. Glad I'm retired and don't have to work in their (or any other) challenging environment!!!

BTW I just upgraded my 0patch (to help keep W7 vital) to PRO and it patches all of schedul2.exe, trueimagemonitor.exe, and something called acronis tools 12,0,1,3036. Not sure what they found-or-believe is wrong with these, but if I have any problems it will require a lot 'little grey cells' to figure all this out!!!

Tom, 0patch is completely new to me so wasn't even aware of it being out there for users to have?  Guess I will need to do some testing for myself if this is making changes (in memory) to Acronis executables?

Ditto regarding being retired which for me is coming up for 12 years this July!

Gotcha by 6 years, though I still tell everyone who asks "if you like what you're doing, by all means keep doing it until they either tell you to stop or can't do it to your satisfaction any more!"

0patch has a free version that does basic stuff, then their paid (PRO) version adds stuff like in my case the Acronis micropatches. About $26 bucks a year which goes down easy and gives me some peace-of-mind given the MS abandonment. Boy and it sure works way better than MS patch process ever has...
