Backup of C drive vs disk image

Thread needs solution

I'm confused. What is the best method of backing up C drive? File backup? Disk and partition backup?
I don't have an external drive so I understand I can't make a disk image. If I did buy one, how do I make a disk image with Acronis?

I'm using Acronis True Image Home 2010 version

My personal preference is to make a full disk image. This allows a restore of your disk that is fully bootable. You don't necessarily need an external hard drive. If you have a second internal hard drive with sufficient space you can store the backup images there as well. See Grover's Index section 3 and section 9AB for some useful guides which will give you a good idea of how things work.

Thank you thomasjk for the reference. I have added a new item which is 8-DD which I like very much. Acronis has begun to offer a great many "how to's" for 2011 and these are offered as links from the following KB article under the "How to's" section.
