Preocess for Restoring to New W10 Machine

Thread needs solution

What would be the steps involved in restoring a true image backup from one W10 machine to a new one ?

The first thing is that both machines must be running the same version of Windows, for example Windows 10 Pro x64. You should activate the Windows 10 installation on the new PC; preferably identifying it with Microsoft Account log in - makes it a bit easier.

Then you backup the installation on the old computer and then restore it to the new computer. It is best if both these tasks are done using the recovery media. You should use the Windows RE rather than the Linux recovery media; the Windows RE media should have all necessary drivers (except for proprietary RAID drivers), which is important if the new PC has an M.2 SSD.

It is possible that some programs may need to be reactivated, and to do so you may have to uninstall them from the old PC.

Cannot think of anything else at the moment, but Steve Smith may well have further advice to offer.

Ditto to Ian initially!

Same Windows 10 edition and architecture.
Activation of above on both systems ideally prior to migration.

Make a full disk backup of both systems before migration in case of going back to square 1.

BIOS boot mode should be the same, i.e. both UEFI boot.

Create an Acronis Universal Restore boot disc or USB stick in case might be needed if the new system has some hardware that Windows 10 doesn't recognise automatically and will need drivers for.

If the new system comes with a working Windows 10 install, then make a backup of the installed drivers.

If you are intending to keep both Windows 10 systems active, then activation will be an issue and a new license will be needed for the second system (unless always is licensed via hardware signature).

Will both systems have the same type of boot disk drives?  Both using SATA drives?  If moving from a SATA drive to a system with a newer NVMe M.2 type drive, then may need to have the Intel RST drivers in the ATI rescue media to support RAID SATA mode.  If so, create the rescue media using the MVP Custom PE builder script (link below) and use the option to include the Intel RST support.
