Acronis TIH 2021 Problems
I have bought recently 3 standard versions. First, I see no significant differences compared with the 2019 version. Acronis promised more than I got (or expressed the expectation to deliver more).
For version 2020 I had reported problems with the rescue media. None of these problems have been solved in version 2021. Even worse!
None of the four different ways to produce a rescue USB-stick could boot my PC:
- Simple
- Advanced-WinPE-based media-Windows Recovery Environment
- Advanced-WinPE-based media-ADK
- Linux based media
My first observation was that after the recovery media has been written, the USB-stick could not be safely removed. Any attempt to boot failed since the boot process could not even detect the freshly prepared USB-stick. Of course, I see the stick in the explorer when I boot from disk.
I would like to add that I am an experienced Acronis user, and that my PC is a normal PC with latest Windows 10 versions. Have you deliberately neglected the standard version?

There is definitely a known issue with being able to 'safely remove USB media' and I have not been able to do so myself since installing the new release versions of ATI 2021 and all attempts give the following error:
I have not experienced any issues with creating / using rescue media for ATI 2021 that I am aware of but this is an area that I need to test more before confirming that I do not see an issue. I don't normally create new USB stick rescue media as I have a custom home-made survival kit on an external USB HDD where I have a number of different boot menu options I can choose from, so just normally create a new ATI boot.wim image file and add it to that media.
I would definitely encourage all ATI 2021 users to submit Feedback direct to Acronis for all issues being encountered and especially when these prevent normal or correct use of the application. If more users use Feedback, then Acronis would get a better understanding of the real strength of feeling running through the user community with the changes being introduced and the need to give users fuller control over what they install / use!

Many thanks for the quick replies, JanL_S and Steve.
In the past, when a new Acronis version was released, I took an old USB rescue stick, which worked for many years, selected from the Rescue Media Builder the option “simple” and my new rescue media stick was ready.
Problems occurred in ACRONIS TIH build 25700 (see “Acronis TIH 25700: Rescue USB stick does not work?”). Mustang described in great detail what modification by Acronis caused the problem and hence Acronis should be well aware of it. Of course, as user I would expect that Acronis is watching the forum and takes care of the correction. As far as I can see, the problem(s) has (have) not been resolved by Acronis 2021 build 30480.
The first USB stick I selected to produce a new rescue stick (working as a rescue stick for years) led to the disaster described above. Today, I tried another one and could produce a valid rescue USB stick (advanced->WinPE-based media->Windows ADK, i.e. 1 of 4 options works).
According to my personal experience, it is not always beneficial sending problems or feedback directly to Acronis. I deliberately put my remarks into the forum indicating that I more or less share the many actual critical views in the forum.
To conclude this thread: There is a solution I can live with. But I will not accept another “new” version which has not resolved known problems. Further, backup/restore must remain the kernel of Acronis TIH and the standard edition must be maintained with great care!

I would like to encourage you to follow Steve Smith's advice and send feedback to Acronis outlining your concerns and preferences.

Hello Everyone! This issue is currently under investigation by Acronis RnD and my colleagues would be grateful for the opportunity to conduct a remote session on an affected system. If the issue reproduces on your PC and you're ready for the remote session with a developer, please let me know. Thank you!

Ekaterina, I am able to reproduce this issue on my main laptop but for an external USB HDD drive with a custom Survival Kit 32GB FAT32 boot partition at the start of the 2TB drive. My USB sticks can be safely removed when they contain only a single FAT32 partition.
Note: the ESD-USB (F:) FAT32 partition was created by the Windows 10 Media Creation Tool for installing the OS originally.

I think I mentioned this in another topic, but I will reiterate here.
On my laptop this problem occurs with a simple FAT32 formatted thumb drive that is the Rescue Media I built under ATI 2020.
I disabled everything in ATI 2021... all the services and executables. After a reboot I checked and there was nothing running. And the problem still occurred.
I then uninstalled ATI 2021 and the problem went away. My conclusion is that it relates to a driver that was left in the installation.

Ekaterina, Same as Steve with the same hard drive.

Ekaterina,
I refer to the ticket
[04586801] Known error still in latest version [ ref:_00D30Zcb._5001T1PKaki:ref ].
I have sent the requested system report through Google mail on 4th of September 2020. According to a corresponding Google message, the document was not even opened till today! I conclude that user support is no longer needed for these two issues.
Kind regards,
Klaus

Save/Restore settings
In the context of the above-mentioned problems I have been asked to do a clean install of TIH 2021, which I did. Of course, I relied on the possibility of reinstalling my settings of 7 backup-tasks.
To be precise I used the option “Save settings to file” and then “Import settings from file”. And indeed, something was imported after the clean reinstall: a wrong backup name, wrong backup details, for instance an incremental backup instead of a full backup, a scheduled backup instead of unscheduled etc. Although unwanted, one incremental backup started immediately. I would like to add, that due to my experience with incremental backup chains I have not a single incremental scheme on my PC! It took me hours to cleanup and rebuild everything. The last weeks I spent days with TIH 2021.
The two options to save and import settings are so clear and simple, that a user cannot make something wrong. The minimum to say is that this problem needs (as several other problems) some quality checks and true consolidation.
USB sticks blocked from safe release:
It has been reported in several threads that the save release of USB sticks is blocked. After I have switched-off Active Protection (Antiransom Protection) this problem disappeared.

I have never had issues such as you describe with save and restore settings. I definitely used it with the initial release of ATI 2021, cannot remember if I used it with the current build. It is always possible that it is now broken, but not sure how that would be possible.

The problem with ejecting external USB drives is not resolved by #32010 despite the notes saying that it should be!
