Big problem with Office 2003 files - True Image will not process them
Hi,
PLease help I am trialing the latest True Image version of your software and it will not process older 2003 Office files. This includes XLS,DOC and PPT. I like the features but will not purchase a full copy unless I am able to back up my old files.
regards,
Paul.

Hi,
I am getting error messages when I backup office docs stored in my documents. The message says "failed to back up file or folder" then the path of the doc. then it says " An error occured while reading a file. The backed up file in the backup may be corrupted and will not re recovered correctly."
ignore / cancel
This happens for many files all of which are office document extensions. Please see attached dialogue box and log extract.
regards,
Paul.

Hi
Let me suggest you do a full dik image. This should back up everything including you Docs. These can easily be retrieved ( if it works) from the image

The problem I have is that the full image will take up too much space and the reason I selected this product was because is should be able to perform file backup as well as a disk image for the OS. Hopefully someone from Acronis will be able to help me.
Regards and thanks,
Paul.

Let me suggest another approach. Make a Rescue Media and then try to BAckup your docs using it
What I mean is boot from the Rescue Media and do a backup

Paul - it sounds like you want to perform two different types of backups (1) entire system, this includes the OS and (2) just your data (documents, etc.) For the first TI (2011) for me has worked like a champ. If you are using a desktop PC then I suggest you install a large internal drive just for TI backups. For the second I suggest using SyncBack Pro, not that TI will not do it but SBP has a lot more flexibility. While there is a standard version of SyncBack the Pro version will backup locked files like the Outlook PST. Again this BU should be to another drive, either the internal you are using for TI or an external USB drive (much slower) or eSATA which is much faster than USB.

Paul,
If you copy these files onto your desktop, can you back them up then? I am wondering if this is not a permission/security settings issue.

Hello,
Reading the log, it seems that the files (your "my document" folder in fact) are located on a network share (buffalo NAS ?).
TrueImage home is not able to backup files from a network share. It can backup files from local hard drives to a backup share but not from a networkshare.
I don't know for your NAS but on synology ones there is an integrated backup feature that perform what you want to do without the need of having a computer to do the task. You should perhaps look at it on your NAS.
One thing about storing "my document" on a network share. If you move to windows seven there is a risk that this folder won't be indexed by the search engine, at least I've not been able to configure seven to index network shares (without having a synch local copy).
Perhaps that this (seven search and TrueImage backup) could be solved by using a ISCSI drive (if your NAS allows it) but this brings other limitations.
So again, in your case, I'll look at my NAS backup feature first (Synology can perform full + incrementals for example).

On my computer, ATI successfully backs up office files that are on a network share (a vista computer hosts the share). I do not have a NAS.
I know there have been issues when backing up to some NAS models.
My best guess is that this is a problem with authentication...

What a great response. Thank you all, lots of tips and correct observations about my documents being stored on my NAS drive.
I think I will try Synchback pro before making a final purchase decision.
Kind regards,
Paul.

Paul - I'd suggest both TI and SBP, this is what I use and at different times both have been necessary. Whatever you implement be sure to TEST and TEST! I've been burned a few times by not testing enough. SBP will allow you to setup unlimited profiles (BU configurations) and customize to meet your needs. Example of some of my backups.
1) Sync Documents to Public folder. My public folder is on a RAID 6 array on my main desktop. The main desktop access the Documents folder on the RAID as the default Office 2010 folder. My wife's laptop also access this folder as the Documents default folder. My main laptop will sync with this folder nightly as will my other systems. This runs nightly.
2) Mirror Documents to a BU Documents folder - I actually run this on my main desktop to the RAID 6 and on my main laptop to an eSATA drive connected to the laptop. This runs nightly.
3) Sync Documents to a BU Documents folder without deleting any files in the destination folder. This is a one-way sync from the source to the destination. I run this as what SBP calls "Fast Backup" which runs faster by doing less scans. This runs nightly.
4) Mirror the Outlook files to daily folders - this runs nightly.
5) I also use SBP to backup other critical data. Some run nightly, others once a week.
All of the options available for backups in SBP can be a bit overwhelming at first. I've used it for about three years and still feel that I have more to learn. Again TEST, TEST.
I use TI to backup my entire C drive on all of my systems (I run nightly incremental and weekly run a full and keep 5 weeks). Some BU to the RAID 6 others currently BU to external SATA or USB2 drives. There have been a few times that I've drilled down into a TI BU to find some file that I need.
