Unable to take backups to an LG BH08LS20 Super Multi Blue DVD drive

Thread needs solution

I've so far been spectacularly unsuccessful taking Acronis True Image Home 2010 backups to an LG BH08LS20 blu-ray disk drive using Verbatim BD-R blank disks. I updated to build 7,046 and the problem is still with me. When it calls for me to insert the first media disk it works for a bit, then I get an error message "Error occurred while writing to the file" (no other code or explanation). I'm trying to include a copy of True Image to make a self-contained recovery disk; I've tried running with compression turned off and it still fails, presumably when it tries its first write. Am I missing some setup I need to do?

Hello Michael!

Welcome to Acronis Forum, we are glad to greet you here!

Thank you for finding time to report about the issue. I'm really sorry that you had a bad experience.

We are aware of this issue, and currently our developers are working on a fix, though there are still not timeframes when it will be implemented. Be sure we will keep you posted regarding this case, and meanwhile we can suggest you to backup onto the DVD as a workaround.

I completely share your concern and would like to apologise for the inconvenience caused. Your satisfation and confidence are very important for us, so any feedback or suggestions will be highly appreciated.

Should you need anything else or have any further questions - feel free to contact us at your earliest convenience, we will be happy to help you!

Thank you!

I'm glad(?) to hear that it's not something I'm doing wrong!

Given the popularity of this drive in my area (Best Buy and other computer dealers around here sell many of these judging by the inventory I've seen on shelves) I hope you attach a reasonably high priority to fixing the problem.

Your comment "we can suggest you to backup onto the DVD as a workaround" is confusing; backing up onto the DVD is precisely what I'm trying to do and what fails (unless you mean a "plain DVD" vs. BD-R). My workaround (tested today) is to run the backup to a file in a different partition (in this case on a physically different drive), then copy the file to the BD-R using software LG packages with the drive. This unfortunately does not result in a bootable, self-contained recovery disk which is my eventual goal. My workaround to that is to create an Acronis bootable CD; the LG drive did that perfectly. Once a fix becomes available I woll then attempt to use BD-R DL...

Michael, Yana was referring to a backup to a standard DVD instead of BluRay.

Having assumed that Acronis would use Blu-ray as advertised, I purchased and installed the LG drive, obtained a pack of blank BDR-DL disks, acquired the Acronis software and tried to back up my system. The suggestion that I should use 10 standard disks to back up what should fit on a single BDR-DL platter is a very poor idea for a workaround. You people need to fix this. The fact that I've received no feedback from you since my original post says you aren't very serious about it so count me as another on the list of dissatisfied Acronis customers.

Hello,

thomasjk, thanks for the assistance.

Michael, we're really sorry for the difficulties you've experienced.

To investigate the issue and to provide you with a solution could you please gather AcronisInfo output and submit a support request with the collected information?

At the meantime, I may suggest you the following workaround: save a backup archive to any external/internal drive and later save it to a BluRay disc manually.

We are looking forward to hearing back from you at your earliest convenience.

Thank you.

I have collected the requested information under both WinXP SP3 and Win 7 (have dual boot); what do I do to submit it? The only thing I found on your website that looks like a way to submit this appears to require I purchase additional support. I'm not sure why I need to send these files given your first response states this is a known problem and a fix is being worked on.

Hello Michael,

I've created a case #00720962 for you and have escalated it to our Tier2 support team. They'll analyze the information and shall provide you with a possible solution.

Please accept our apologies for any delays you might experience.

Thank you.

What is the status of this? So far the only time I've received any feedback on the problem is when I've added another post. Is there some way I can use the case number listed above to see what's happening? Between the inability of the product to use this device (in spite of what you advertise) for backups and the comments posted by others having various serious problems I can't say I'm very confident it will work for restores (especially from Blu-ray) should I need it.

Hello Michael,

We're really sorry for the delays with the response.

Unfortunately, I can't provide you with any updates on the status of the case, it's still under investigation. However, I've contacted the responsible manager and your case will be handled as soon as possible.

I'll let you know when any new information will be available.

Thank you.

Hello again Michael,

I've just received a new information regarding the issue.

The issue you have caused by a 3rd-parti module growisofs. You can read more about this module here. We're trying to fix the issue, but ETA is still unavailable, we're really sorry for this.

Please let me know if you have any additional questions.

Thank you.

Same here guys, for months now waiting for a fix to the 50gb d/l blu ray problem.
WORKS FINE TO A SINGLE LAYER THOUGH.

STILL WAITING .............

Correct me if I'm wrong but the information provided above seems to indicate that while growisofs may be a 3rd party module from a package you've licensed to include in ATI it has been modified by your staff. Is the problem with the original code, the modifications or with the BD driver code (which I believe is Microsoft, nothing special was installed by me during the implementation of Windows 7 or XP SP3.

Hello Michael,

We're using that 3rd-party module because it is licensed under GNU General Public License Version 2 so we can modify it, whereas Microsoft has its own driver and we can't use/modify it for our purposes.

We're still working on the issue. Please accept our profound apologies.

John, thank you for the workaround.

Have you given up on fixing this problem or is the fix in Release 11, requiring me to purchase an upgrade to use dual-layer BD?

Hello all,

Thank you for your valuable feedback.

Please, allow me to clarify the situation.

The third-party software that we use for writing to Blu-ray discs, growisofs, can be modified by us, but unfortunately, we cannot add new functionality to it. That is why we are having all the issues reported above. We are very sorry about all the inconvenience.

You are more than welcome to submit your feedback here about this issue.

As soon as there is any progress I will definitely update this thread with additional information.

Thank you.

This is the SAME answer I've had for 11 months, and still no fix, this is disgusting service .
There are plenty of D/L Blu-rays out there now and still you cannot write correctly to them.

I'm still getting e-mails from everyone in India asking if my case can be closed.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO way, please fix it .
NNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN O WWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW

The next 2 month are elapsed and nothing has be changed.
Very, very pure.

Not only have Acronis NOT yet repaired the write to a d/l 50GB bluray, but they have upgraded several times without addressing this serious problem.

It's close to 18 months now since I reported this, had at least a dozen (different) foreign speaking so called technicians call me and still the problem exists.

I've long since given up on this, I refuse to waste my time on any vendor who cannot fix what should be relatively straight-forward issues. Back in September Anton stated "The third-party software that we use for writing to Blu-ray discs, growisofs, can be modified by us, but unfortunately, we cannot add new functionality to it." It would be interesting to know what "can be modified by us" means; over the years I worked with IBM and other mainframe operating system software I had numerous occasions to write modifications, some of which introduced new functionality. In some cases it meant simply adding an additional layer (front-end or rear-end) to a module; in some cases you had to add a "hook", an external call to a separate piece of code that did what you wanted. In all these cases the final module wound up doing whatever I wanted (including new functions) but in each case the mods were easily backed off if that module were maintained or upgraded or had new features added that might supercede what I had done or cause any issues needing the mod to be amended. I fail to see how Acronis could be so boxed in that even a contractual restriction would stop them from fixing this (including new functionality) if they were willing to commit the resources to it. Believe me, nobody has tighter restrictions on their code than IBM...

Well, 2011 updates were issued 12/09/2010 and with a promise to have the bluray 50gb issues fixed in both 2011 and 2010 ............... NADA ............................ still nothing.

You guys ever going to get your act together? All this time with nothing, not even an offer to upgrade to offset the inconvenience (if not outright fraud) you've perpetrated...

Hello all,

Thank you very much for your posts and your constant feedback.

I have been in touch with our Development team about this issue and I would like to provide you with a workaround that could make this work. It is very likely that the same issue is also present in Acronis True Image 2011 Home because of that third-party software that we have been using.

I will send you each a private message with a download link and I would really appreciate if the solution worked for you or not, you can get back to me either here or via a PM.

The workaround that I mention is a custom build, if it works for you, we will implement it.

Please let me know if you have additional questions.

If I missed anyone please do not hesitate to contact me via a PM.

Thank you.

Has anyone manged to download this file yet ? it won't allow me to display the page or d/l the file.

Whatever the .ftpquota file is, that I cannot download; I get an error 550 prohibited file name /.ftpquota
The .exe file I can download but I don't know if the other file is needed (i.e. has directions for implementation?).

Oddly enough I'm having problems accessing the PM at all if I use Internet Explorer, I get a message that access to it is forbidden. If I use Firefox 4RC I can get to the PM and download the .exe file only.

Typical ........ can't even get the damn file transfer to work either.

The website declined to show this webpage ............................................................ ???????

Don't even bother to D/L the file guys, it's 2010 and still doesn't work with dual layer blue ray.

Can't someone show these excuses for programmers that a d/l blue ray disk has 50gb available.
