ABR10 - OS not booting after recovery

Thread needs solution

I am validating a backup of a Dell T3400 that has been configured for use with company software, by restoring onto a second hard drive (with Universal Restore) and plugging into a second machine.

The backup is a full backup of a ~70GB C:, and for the restore I select 'volumes' and make sure both MBR and OS partition are selected. It is both created and restored with ABR10 bootable media v10.0.12708.

When the system is booted, BIOS checks run, and then I am left with a black screen with flashing underscore cursor. No messages indicate problems like 'no system disk' or anything else.

I suspected that the HDD that I was restoring to was the fault - an 80GB Samsung. I then tried a 500GB Samsung - it worked...

After changes to the original PC, I went to revalidate the procedure and results of restoring to another PC, and found now that I am getting the same hang with the 500GB HDD.

I am currently attempting a restore to a VM to try to rule out the Dell hardware doing something too fancy for its own good, and have received an error message: File 'restore_aw_assistant.exe', that is required for installation of the device 'Acronis Restore Anywhe"re Assistant (ID: Acronis)' in Microsoft Windows XP Professional, cannot be found"

Any ideas appreciated.

Hello JGB,

Thank you for your post. I will do my best to help you with this issue.

This is a known product issue which we are still working on, I apologize for any inconvenience. However, we will definitely keep you posted either through the case that you have opened with our Support team or through the forum.

Please let me know if you have additional questions.

Thank you.

Thanks Anton for the reassurance, however you haven't provided any information on the problem.

WHAT is the know issue exactly?
HOW do I avoid it?
CAN I work around it?

I know I sound a touch sensitive about this, but I spent 4-6 hours on the Acronis support web chat last week downloading multiple ISOs and feeling like I was getting nowhere. I'd appreciate any more information you can give me, as this issue leaves me completely exposed with relation to backups I need to be 100% reliable.

Selected quotes from webchat session - hopefully saves someone the time running around in circles trying to find out more about similar problems.
Slightly edited to improve flow of information.

Chetan Kulkarni: It is only a documentation of the bug with Acronis. And there are no updates on it

Joshua Bynon: Do you know if the problem is with the recovery software or the image itself?
Chetan Kulkarni: Its got to be with the Recovery software.

Chetan Kulkarni: Have you tried on other systems?
...
Joshua Bynon: When you say tried on other systems, I have backed up a single machine - A dell precision T3400, and tried to restore to multiple others, with 4 or more HDDs as targets in that time. The target PCs included a Dell Precision T3500 and Precision 380
Joshua Bynon: Also tried on the T3400
Chetan Kulkarni: Yes, I meant restoration
Joshua Bynon: I have had success at random times. Notably, I restored to a HDD that was brand new and it succeeded - at that stage I started to blame the original HDD that I tried.

I need to have this problem solved, otherwise I'll be forced to another brand of software - this means more work for me developing documents that I've already spent too much time on!
I'd strongly recommend anyone else with Advanced Workstation and Universal Restore build 12708 perform a trial restoration to make sure you're not leaving your clients exposed!!!
