Backup - external drive not detected by backup program

Thread solved

After a failed universal restore (performed with the Acronis Cyper Protect tools), the target ssd (2TB NVMe) became unusable - WIndows 10 Disk Manager reported it as unknown and was unable to initialize it, diskpart does not see it; other partition managers also were unable to remedy the situation. Finally, using MiniTool Partition Wizard Pro, the ssd could be "repaired" and cleant, and everything appears to be fine - only when I want to create another backup, Acronis Cyber Protect Home does not recognize the drive as a target where to write the backup to. Instead, it asks me simply to add a sufficiently large medium. Unconnecting and reconnecting the drive (via USB) does not help.

Goetz, welcome to these public User Forums.

Not sure why your topic has been posted in this ATI 2017 Forum - it would be better to post in the Acronis Cyber Protect Home Office Forum (formerly Acronis True Image 2021) Forum where it would get better focus from Acronis.

What exactly are you trying to do here?  It sounds like the 2TB NVMe SSD is installed in an external USB enclosure but I am a little confused by you mentioning using Universal Restore to that SSD along with also using it as a target for a Backup operation???

Universal Restore is only needed when attempting to migrate an installed Windows OS from one set of PC hardware (CPU, motherboard, memory, controllers etc) to a different set of hardware, i.e. a different brand or type of PC, where its main purpose is to help identify device drivers that may be needed by that different hardware that were not present or installed in the original system.

If your intention is to upgrade an existing smaller NVMe SSD to a larger SSD in the same PC, then it is best recommended to use Backup & Recovery using the normal Acronis bootable rescue media with the new SSD installed inside the computer where it is to be used.

See forum topic: Steve migrate NVMe SSD where I have documented (with images) the process that I have used multiple times for my own laptops using Backup & Recovery.   I used this on my main laptop just around a week ago to upgrade my Samsung 980 NVMe 1TB SSD to a new Samsung 990 NVMe 2TB SSD and all went correctly & successfully.

Hi Steve, it was only today that I received a mail notifying me about your posting.

I'd tried to use Universal Restore in exactly the way you describe in that I wanted to migrate an old Acer laptop with SATA harddrive to a new Acer model with a Samsung 980 NVMe 2 TB SSD. I failed miserably, with a damaged SSD as a result. Interestingly, the new harddisk drivers were not recognized, neither by Acronis Universal Restore nor by AOMEI Backupper Universal Restore software with the difference that AOMEI software left my Samsung 980 SSD intact. Before, a first try to create an installation disk with the new Acer drivers had worked seamlessly. Meanwhile, I installed WIndows 11 on the new laptop with a new Samsung SSD and moved the installed applications successfully from the old laptop to the new one by means of a commercial program, PCTrans by EaseUS.
