What exactly do I need to have to be able to restore a crashed HD

Thread needs solution

I own TIH 2010. Am wondering other than a complete backup on an external drive (in this case I have a Seagate 320GB USB drive), what else MUST I have in order to be able to fully restore my h/d in the event of a total crash?

Is the backup enough or do I need a boot CD? Also, if I need a boot CD, does it have to be updated every so often or is it generic enough that it can be used forever?

Thank you.

You need a boot cd or another installed windows with trueimage that you can run if the main one crashed. If you checked that boot cd works with your hardware (motherboard+hard disk controller+video card+mouse+keyboard + optionally network card) there is no need to update as long as hardware remains the same.

Just to be sure, your backup needs to be a disk and partition type backup, not a file backup. Also, make sure that you check the disk box to ensure all partitions will be backed up.

Andrew,
In addition to what has been written,

The TrueImage Rescue/Recovery CD is the prime vehicle for recovery to your existing or a new disk. If your regular hard drive is not accessible for whatever reasons, the CD is your only option. Likewise, if you simply need to restore your existing C drive (for example), this should be done when booted from the Rescue CD. Take the time now to do a few file restores so you know that your CD will function with your hardware configuration.

If you update a TrueImage build within Windows, you also will need to create a new updated CD. An old CD will be unable to restore any backup created by a newer version of TrueImage. I make a practice of writing the version and build number and serial number on the actual CD and I retain each CD that I create. Also be sure and register your serial number with Acronis so you have access to fixes (builds) to your existing version.

If you are using Windows 7 or Vista or even XP, it is important that you create and save a backup and that backup must include all partitions--even if they do not have drive letters assigned. You want your backup to include everything.
