Help! DD 11 Increased Partition but not File System?
Hello,
I used Disk Director Home 11 to add 100 Gig from unallocated space to the System Partition of a Vista machine.
Disk Director shows the new partition size of 324 GB with "Primary, Healthy"
But Windows Explorer and Windows Disk Manager still only shows the original 224 GB?
I ran chkdsk /F from the command line from the Windows PE-based boot disk. But still the same issue.
Machine: Sony Vaio VGN-FZ430E Laptom
OS: Vista Home Edition SP2 with current patches.
Product: Disk Director 11
Also installed: Acronis True Image Home 2011
Any Ideas?
Thanks,
Al

Thank you Anton,
I was able to resolve the issue with tech support
I think that before I was not selecting "Append all unallocated disk
space to the volume".
I did not think I needed to check this if I indicated the amount of space I wanted to add by using the slider.
(Now I think I understand that "Volume" means "File System")
I booted from the Acronis boot disk again.
This time, I clicked the 324 GB C: partition and selected "Resize Disk"
but the only thing I did was check "Append all unallocated....".
After DD11 ran again and rebooted, I was all set!
Thanks for your help.

Hello
I have used Acronis Disk Director for a number of years and it worked fine.
My boot partition was running out of space and I tried to resize the boot partition to increase the size. I never did get it to work after trying numerous methods. I finally ended up with the partition size of 149GB (Total disk). When Disk Director reboots it fails trying to resize the partition. "Failed to execute the command in the environment", "FDISK operation has failed"
Screenshot of ADD 11 Home management windows shows one large system partition with an increase from 49 GB to 149GB.
Windows Explorer and Windows disk management window show the system partition of 49 GB, the original size.
I have run chkdsk /f and chkdsk /f /r numerous times and on every occasion it reports the disk as being healthy. I scoured the forums and have not been able to find any help.
Any help will be greatly appreciated
Canaima

Hopefully, you have a backup image of the partition.
If it's Windows 7, does Disk Management let you Shrink or Expand the partition?
Does DD show that you could resize the partition smaller?
Are you getting the same results with DD from the DD CD as with DD in Windows?

Hello MudCrab:
Thanks for your fast response.
The OS I am using is Windows XP Sp3.
To be sure to answer your second question I booted from the CD using latest ISO version of DD and tried to resize the partition from149GB to 100GB. The process failed "Corrupted file system. Please run error-checking tool to check & fix file systems"
I ran from the Windows OS chkdsk /f and chkdsk /r. After rebooting to Windows OS I ran DD from Windows. The procedure failed with error messages as follows: "Failed to execute the command in the environment", "FDISK operation failed", "Corrupted File System", File record corrupted".
Windows Explorer shows a total partition size of 48.83 with 12.98 free.
Windows Disk Management shows in the upper portion - The boot drive of 48.83 GB with 12.98 free. In the lower portion of Disk Management show one large partition of 149 GB, the same as DD.
Thanks
Bert

Do you have enough unallocated space on another drive to allow you to try copying the partition? I'm wondering if DD would copy it as 48GB or as 149GB (or if it would just error).
What build of DD 11 are you using?
Can you use the Disk Editor in DD and capture a screenshot of what the partition table (in the MBR) looks like as well as a screenshot of the boot sector of the problem partition?
For the partition table, right-click on the Disk # section of the graphic (should be orange) and select Edit Disk. This should pull up Absolute Sector 0. In the View menu, select As Partition Table. Resize the screen as necessary to display the entire table and take a screenshot.
For the partition's boot sector, right-click on the partition section of the graphic (should be orange) and select Edit Volume. This should pull up the first sector of the partition (note that DD will say Sector 0 because it's not displaying the absolute sector). In the View menu, select As NTFS Boot Sector (I assume the partition is NTFS). Resize the screen as necessary to display the data and take a screenshot.

Hello MudCrab:
I tried copying the boot partition to another drive with more than 300 GB of unallocated space but the process failed with the following error "Corrupted file system". This was done with DD booting from the CD.
The builds of DD are as follows: CD Disk - Build 11.0.2114. Windows installed DD - Build 11.0.0.2121.
Screenshots of the partition table and the boot sector are attached.
Thanks again
Bert

Bert,
Can you also post a screenshot of what DD and Disk Management show for the drive (I want to see the graphic parts)?
The partition size in the partition table isn't what I expected from the sizes you posted.

Hell MudCrap:
In my haste to get the post out I forgot to explain the difference in the format of the partition for my system drive.
While I was trying to move things around to get the unallocated space to copy the system partition my system crashed. Guess what -- I did not have a backup of the latest changes that I made in testing. I had to go back to an earlier backup to restore my system. I noted on my list for my post just plain forgot. The attachments that I sent on 04\26\2011 all refer to the system partition of 90GB.
Sorry for the confusion.

Bert,
Can you post new Boot Sector and Partition Table screenshots so I can tell what they are now?
Also, let me know for sure exactly which partition is the one with the problem.

Hello MudCrab:
I must apologize for the confusion that I created but it was beyond my control.
I do not know if it were the right thing to do but here is what I did. I removed all the hard drives except the system drive and recorded the information that you requested. I did it this way so that there would be chance of errors.
As always thanks for the help. I do appreciate it very much.

Thanks. It's more clear now.
This is what I would try. Boot to the DD CD, view the partition table, and set the Number of Sectors to one sector more than what the Boot Sector reports. In your case, the value would need to be 102398247 (currently, it's 188747622). Then click in another field (to activate the "Save" button) and then save the sector. Reboot and see if Windows sees the partition okay. It should be at the same size (the small size) in both places. You could then try resizing it again and see if DD allows it (I would try the resize using the DD CD and not from Windows if DD requires a reboot to do it).

Hi MudCrab:
I made the change as you requested. I thought that you have fixed the problem. I went ahead and tried to resize the partition from 48GB to approximately 100GB using the DD CD. I rebooted the PC into Windows and checked the Windows Disk Management and it showed that the partition did not change. I have attached the partition table, the NTFS Boot Sector and the disk management for both DD and Windows for your information..
As usual

Did you try copying the partition? Or creating a backup image and then restoring it with resize (if you have TI)?
Does chkdsk report anything different?
You would need to fix the size in the partition table again before trying.
Can DD successfully resize any other NTFS partitions? You could create one to use for testing if you don't want to risk an existing partition.
Have you tried using anything else (like GParted, for example)?

Hi MubCrab:
Sorry I did not get back earlier. I tried most of the recommendations sometimes more than once without success. I finally tried the free program Gparted and lo and behold it worked. I tested it out by resizing first increasing the partition then testing it out. I then decreased the partition to see if it would work also. That worked too. I made backups of both partitions (increased & decreased ) and that seemed to work.
I must thank you for your help. Most of all I did not have to reformat and reinstall windows.
Thanks for the help and keep up the good work.
Bert
