ATI Home 11: no go with XPSP3, but OK with Win7 RC?

Thread needs solution

Computer #1: XPSP3, Asus M3N78-EM with SATA HD and CD/DVD burner. No RAID or AHCI.

Computer #2: Win7 RC, Gigabyte GA-MA78GM-S2H with SATA HD and CD/DVD burner. No RAID or AHCI.

External USB HD stores backup .tib images for both systems.

Both systems write backup images just fine with ATI (build 8101). But #1 (XP) will not restore, either in a Windows environment or with the rescue/boot disk. Within Windows, it just re-boots back into Windows without restoring. With the rescue disk, the HD is not recognized--just the attached external USB drive.

With computer #2 (Win7) all features work perfectly. Go figure.

Any help appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Make a current backup of the #2. Download the Trial of version 2009. Uninstall ver 11, install the 2009 Trial and make the Rescue CD to try the restore of the ver.11 backup for #1.
Then restore the current backup of #2 if you want to get rid of the Trial completely.

The issue is nothing to do with XP or W7 but rather with the TI11 Linux rescue CD not recognizing the disk hardware on the XP machine properly. Even if the restore of the active partition is started in Windows, the machine reboots and loads the Linux rescue environment from HD.

Not surprisingly, DwnnDrty has given the possible solution.

I think I'm gonna wait until I get my two"official" Win 7 disks around October 22, because I'll have to re-install the OSs anyway.

I don't HAVE to restore anything at the moment---I was just testing the Acronis software. And it flunked big time.

I just wonder if there's something going on with the Asus chipset or sata controller, where it's not compatible with Acronis somehow.

The Gigabyte board seems fine.

Maybe I'll load the AHCI drivers when I reinstall and see how that works out.

I figured it out. here's my post in another thread that I'll copy here just for the record:

Assuming that you have an Asus MB of recent vintage (as I do), you may want to try this--but no warranty expressed or implied :-)

1. Make a backup of your current partition (if you're able).
2. Enter your BIOS setup. ("Del" key for me)
3. On the MAIN PAGE (page 1) arrow down to "Storage Configuration"
4. Then arrow down to "SATA Mode Select"
5. There are now three options to choose from: "AHCI," "SATA" and "RAID" Modes. You are most likely already in "SATA Mode" (as I was).
6. Choose "AHCI Mode."
7. Hit the F10 key to save the change you just made. Then Y to exit the BIOS.
8. Use your TI 11 Boot/Rescue disk to re-boot.
9. Choose the "Restore" option...blah...blah. (And it's probably wise to "verify" your backup file.)
10. When you're through with the restore, re-boot and go back into the BIOS setup (again, it's the "Del" key for me, and probably you, too) and just un-do what you did earlier: revert back to "SATA Mode" (instead of AHCI) from the "SATA Mode Select" field.
11. Save your BIOS change and re-boot back into Windows with (hopefully) your newly-restored system.

There must be "something" with the Asus chipset/SATA controller vis-a-vis Acronis where the Acronis Recovery Disk only loads AHCI drivers for proper SATA detection.

Glad you found a solution to the problem. It certainly appears the Linux implementation on the Linux recovery CD has drivers that understand AHCI much, much better than plain SATA.

Hello TM,

Thank you for using Acronis Products

I have sent you ISO image of Acronis bootable disc based on different loader, it should solve the initial issue you have with drives recognize.

Yes--much better. At least so far as the Asus "native IDE" for SATA deployment is concerned.

Thanks for your help, Dmitry, but the newly-burned-to-cd .iso will not start Acronis. And I tried all eight of the boot options offered.

Hello TM,

Could you please clarify, what exactly happens when you're trying to boot from CD? When you choose a mode without Quiet, what is the last output you can see on the screen? Could you please make a digital photo of this screen and post it here?

We are looking forward to hearing back from you at your earliest convenience.

Thank you.
