Can Acronis True Image "Back Up, Protect & Restore My Bags_MRU Settings From The Registry" (Folder Layouts)
Hello,
So I was just wondering if this software will truly meet and exceed my expectations in backing up and restoring my system in complete.
I have a lot of folders and files in which I customize the position and the display for example I'll have a main sub folder like "My Music or My Pictures" folder then inside that folder will consist of multiple sub folders then possibly more inside of that sub folder all displayed using explorer's > View > Thumbnails string.
The file's them selfs are then organized using explorer's > "Arrange Icons By" > Name. Ideally I would like to use arrange icons by reverse track order but no string exists so I make do with name then re-organize the tracks in reverse order.
I also use folder templates via right clicking on a folder then navigating to the customize tab. All these settings are then stored in the registry under the following keys
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\BagMRU
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\BagMRU
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\Bags
the problem I tend to have is occasionally I either loose these setting due to a format or there's an unknown problem and all my folder settings restore back to default. which is frustrating cause every folder including system files is effected by random arranged icons and display types such as when opening a folder every icon is displayed in filmstrip. Eurgh time-consuming and mind numbing restoring 1000's of folders .
I use Windows XP service pack 3. I know the default value for storing files & folder layouts under XP is set to 400. I usually modify this value to 20,000 the most I've hit before folders defaulted was 4,000 I have since increased this value to 50,000. I'm unsure if a 3rd party app/software etc is monotoning the size of my registry and trying to decrease it by clearing out my bags :?
What's the best solution in backing up and restoring these settings so I no longer have to restore re-configure all my files and folder layouts.
I'm not familiar with backing up and restoring this will be my first attempt and one my main concerns is the folder layouts not being restored too. I know when transferring files via drag and drop onto a new hard drive defaults the folder template and layouts but I hope with this software I can back up my entire system and restore with-in a minimal time-frame
As of now. I have a Seagate 80GB partitioned by default into C: & D: drive 22.2GB & 44.4GB there is also a hidden back up partition presumably which is used to restore my operating system, Drivers and bundled software using "Packard Smart Restore".
I then have an internal Western Digital Terabyte green caviar drive and a 2 Terabyte Western Digital that I've just purchased and put into my system the drive is unoccupied ready to back up my system.
What do you purpose is the most efficient & effective way of backing up both of the hard drives.
In "My Computer" under "Hard Disk Drives" It looks like this..
(C:) System Files - Capacity: 22.2GB
(D:) Documents And Settings- Capacity: 44.4GB
(E:) Personal Files - Capacity: 931GB
(F:) Back Up - Capacity: 1863.01GB
I want to back up everything including the 931GB WD drive onto 1 hard disk drive. Is this recommended and effective
Thanks

Hi, Thanks for your reply.
I'm not sure exporting the keys then re-importing them would correct the changes that have been made. Most of the files and folder layouts exist on my (E:) Drive. The registry is located on C or D the Seagate drive. How do I test this would work ? If I transfer all my personal files of off the (E:) drive to the (D:) drive "Documents and settings" and then back to the (E:) drive the files and folder layouts default ?
And I would assume the more frequently I back that .Reg key up.. Would resort in less time before it self destructs again. If it were to default for an unknown reason ? how can I get round this. New files are created and old files are updated regularly so a lot of changes occur with-in a short space of time.
Thanks

If you change the location of the files, reimporting the registry keys would not work.
Windows is not very good with remembering folder view settings, and these settings change depending on how you get to the folder. I banged my head on the wall for a while before I gave up.
I am afraid I cannot help you more here.
