"Send Test Email" from modified task crashes TI 2011
True Image Home 2011 Build 6597 (current), Windows 7 x64
I recently changed the password for my outgoing email server, so tried to update an existing scheduled job's notification info. I select Operations > Edit Backup Settings > Disk backup options, click Notification and change the password. That part works, but if I then click "Send test message", TI puts up a "sending message" box and then crashes, with Windows telling me that it "stopped working".
A related issue is that if the notification email settings are incorrect, TI will report that a job failed but the log says it succeeded.
It now will not send the email at the end of the job, even with the correct login info.

Yana,
I cannot submit a support case because it tells me I have not purchased a support contract. My "free support" expired October 29.
I can tell you that creating a new task still shows the problem. I click on the Notification tab, fill in the email server information. In my case I select port 587 and "TLS" as the method - this is what I use. I click the button to send a test message, it tells me it is sending it, then the screen "dims" and Windows tells me that Acronis True Image "stopped working".
This worked when I first bought TI 2011.
The Acronis Info tool did allow me to "save and send" the info it collected, but I have no way to send you the userinfo dump.
Steve

Dear Community!
With Steve's kind assistance and diagnostic information, we've managed to reproduce the issue, and find its cause.
The problem occurs if you set port 587 and "TLS" encryption method in e-mail notification settings. These are recognized as incorrect, and this leads to the product crash.
This issue is very important, and our Development team is already working on the fix. Unfortunately we don't have any ETA available regarding when the fix will be released. Please, if possible use the e-mail notification settings specified in this KB article as a temporary solution.
Please don't hesitate to share your concerns, and feedback with us, we will be glad to address any your questions.
Thank you!

TI2011 may think the settings are "incorrect", but it is mistaken in doing so. Those are the correct settings for the SMTP server I use and TI2010 had no trouble with them, neither do my email client or other software I have that sends email. If I changed to what the KB article suggests, it would not work for me.

It also fails with port 25.

Yana, I'm duplicating the exact same crash as Steve L.
Have previously been using email notifications in 2010, and I think for awhile after upgrading to 2011, but decided to create a fresh daily backup task. Now when I attempt to "test" the email to a Gmail account which requires TLS/port587 to their smtp.gmail.com server, Acronis crashes.
This is a critical problem, and will effect anyone with Gmail.

Yups, I'm having the exact same problem. TI2011 crashes every time with gmail config :(
This is sooo frustrating, as it was working perfectly with 2010. It's impressive; every upgrade the product goes backwards. From 2009 to 2010 was the issue with Windows 7 64 bits (that it crashed the entire OS; took Acronis 3 months to develop a patch). Now email notifications are gone..

I'm having this problem too.
Is it only the "Test" button that causes the problem...or does it crash during the backup too?
Just upgraded to TIH2011...and this was an inauspicious start.
Any update on when this will be fixed? It's over three months old now.

It doesn't send the mail in any case. It may be that the agent crashes when it tries to send but I don't know. I have no idea when or if it will be fixed. The only workaround is to use an outgoing server that doesn't require SSL, which I don't like at all.

That's what happened with me as well (no emails being sent). So my options were to live with TrueImage 2011 without email alerts or to go back to TrueImage 2010 that doesn't work natively on Windows 7 64bits and require special obscure patches to be applied, otherwise they'll crash the entire system.
Eventually I just got tired of having to deal with new silly bugs after every single upgrade and migrated everything to CrashPlan. I'm happy I did. 10x more stable than TrueImage. Less features, but works well in general. Not without its own problems, though: it doesn't work backing up to NAS/external drives (but they say it's because Windows security model), so you have to use non-official workarounds. But so far so good, I'm back at the "set and forget" mode with daily/weekly backups with nice email alerts.
If there's anyone from Acronis here, these are my 3 basic suggestions:
1. please listen (and respond!) to your own forums.
2. your QA process is certainly broken. Fix it.
3. your development process is even more broken. Stop introducing new features just to rip off your customers $29.99 every year. Focus on having ONE decent product. Charge a subscription model (like CrashPlan) if you want to play this game of recurring revenues, but stop introducing bugs.
Good luck!

Thanks for all the feedback and confirmation that Acronis won't be fixing this. I'll contact them today for a refund.

I got the same problem : TLS + 587 port = crash
For Gmail user, you could use SSL + 465 and it works.
Why Acronis does not fix the bug ??? The problem is 6 months old.
I have got some another request : Why Acronis does not implement secure FTP ?
I have supported Acronis since the version 6 of True Image. And I'm disappointed to notice that the problems are not solved.

To work around this, I created an SMTP Proxy program. You can download it from http://smtpproxy.codeplex.com
Hope this helps you.
