Disk read error, press Cntr-Alt-Del

Thread needs solution

I am using ATI Home 2011, Build 6868.

In order to save the work of several days I made an image of the whole disk and in contrast to earlier opportunities I decided to use the sector by sector backup method.

After restoring this backup I got on reboot the error "Disk read error, press Cntr-Alt-Del".

I had never problems with the "normal" backup method.

Has someone an idea which helps?

Thanks in advance, Jürgen

Juergen,

You don't need to do the sector by sector method. It adds the information about sectors that are not used, but doesn't change anything else about how the backup is done.

Most likely your data is not lost, but there is some issue between your disk controller and the disk.

Make sure you retry to reboot several times, take the power out of the computer and retry.

Then, boot the computer into the BIOS and verify that the BIOS can see the disk. If not, open the computer and check the disk cables. Unplug them and plug them back. Verify the Master/Slave settings if this is an IDE disk. Reset your CMOS.

If the BIOS can see the disk, but it doesn't boot. Use your manufacturer's diagnosis disk to assess the health of the data on the disk.

If the disk is in good health, use the Windows recovery CD to fix the startup.

Also, while in the BIOS, check the Boot Priority settings where you specify where the BIOS looks for the bootstrap first (CD, Hdisk, etc.) and then if you BIOS has a setting for it, check the Boot Prioroty order of Hdisks.
