Acronis TrueImageLauncher.exe icon image broken

Thread needs solution

Hi,

A few times after restarting my computer, the image for TrueImageLauncher.exe icon is broken. This is true for both the shortcut to the program in the Start Menu and the file system locate at C:\Program Files (x86)\Acronis\TrueImageHome. It looks just like when a data loses its file association. I tried to "change" the icon image by browsing to the same location but that didn't help. When you look at the shortcut properties, it does show the correct icon image but just doesn't display it.

I was able to temporarily fix the icon by changing the path to point to TrueImage.exe.

I also noticed that the Target path in the shortcut properties was using the incorrect environment variable for Program Files. I am using Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit and this is the variable used.

  • %Program Files% (x86) - this is how I found it in the properties
  • %Program Files (x86)% - this is how it should be

Has anyone else seen this problem? How do you fix this? I even wiped and reinstalled windows. When I first install the program it is fine until after a couple of restarts.

Thanks for your help!
Rob

This particular problem has to do with TrueImageLauncher.exe only. This has something to do with either how the icon was applied to the code, the way the program is packaged, or a compatibility issue with Windows 7 64-bit.

I have written programs with Visual Studio and have seen this problem first-hand. They may or may not have used Visual Studio but it's possible for another IDE to have a similar issue. I have a strong feeling this has more with the way the program was developed than with Windows settings. An EXE should have an icon assigned to it rather than a file association within Windows. EXE files don't have a default icon like TXT files, for example. EXE files have icons applied to them through the development process. Please see attached.

Same problem just happened here. Only the Acronis shortcuts lost icons.

Changed from last version of Acronis a few days ago, but these new icons got "lost" this morning.

Also using Win7 Ultimate 64 bit.

I already fixed the problem by pointing to the program file again.

However, thought you'd like to know:

The link you sent was for 2010, although I guess I hadn't said I had just switched to 2011.
I generated a report anyway, thinking you might find it useful. Unfortunately, it couldn't be sent to you, as this windows machine doesn't have an email client configured, as I only do webmail on this machine. If you'd like to see it anyway, let me know what address to send it to. (I saved the zip file to my HDD.) Otherwise, I'll wait until the next time it happens.

I've got the same problem with TI2010 Home. Even when I view the TrueImageLauncher.exe file through explorer, it has no icon. When I browse for the icon by clicking 'change icon' in shortcut, it pulls an icon from the exe but won't show it once I choose it. This happened on my previous install and now on a fresh install. I believe my AMD video card is the culprit somehow. No matter what I change the icon to, it shows no icon. Windows 7 Ultimate x64.

Choose the icon from the following exe in the same folder; for example C:\Program Files (x86)\Acronis\TrueImageHome\AcronisTibUrlHandler.exe

robmo:

This issue has been a perennial problem with TI. I first noticed it with version 10, which was released in 2007, and it is present in TI 2011 and now in TI 2012. I suspect that it was also present in the versions in between (TI 11, TI 2009, and TI 2010).

Also, it isn't just a problem when installed on a 64-bit operating system; it's also present on the 32-bit operating systems as well. I've observed it on WinXP, Vista, and Windows 7. Currently I see it with TI 2012 on both Win7 x86 and Win 7 x64.

Fiddling with the icon assignment sometimes fixes it. One difficulty with Windows 7 and its ability to "pin" a program to the taskbar is that if you pin TrueImageLauncher.exe then you can sometimes get the correct icon to stay put. However, if you then start TI, the TrueImageLauncher process then starts TrueImage.exe, which places a second icon on the Taskbar (instead of just highlighting the pinned icon). And if you start TrueImage and then try to pin its icon to the Taskbar, as soon the TI process terminates the pinned icon gets lost and looks like the one in your picture.

Basically, it's a mess and has been for a long time...

One way to fix the broken icons in Windows7 is by starting in safe mode.

Just start in safe mode completely, shutdown and restart ...the icons gets restored.

I was able to get it to use the icon for TrueImageLauncher.exe afterall. It took a reboot (or maybe just an explorer restart) to see it. Program's pinned to my start menu if that helps.
