Backup location options not working
Hi,
I am running True Image Home 11.0 on two computers.
I am trying to limit the size of the backup locations on both machines but neither are working. If, for instance, I set the location to only hold 3 backups, True Image keeps producing backups even after there are 4 there. The same applies to trying to limit the location by size. I understand that the limits have to be breached for this to work but it is not working long after the limit has been breached.
Because I am getting the same problem on two different computers, I can only assume that the problem is caused by me doing (or not doing) something significant. Can anyone think of anything I can try to cure this problem, please?

But it is supposed to work automatically. Surely that is the point of having Backup Locations. Yes, I could do it manually, and I am having to do so at the moment, but I would like to have the program work the way it is supposed to.

Yes, but sometimes it goes wonky and you have to "reset" things. Not ideal but better than fiddling with batch files, which is what we had to do prior to ati10. After ati11, acronis changed the way ati works such that, instead of using Tasks and configuration files in Backup Locations, it uses an internal database to track backups and store rules. Acronis has slowly been perfecting this method.

Ok, I think I see what you mean now. I will give it a try and let you know if it works. Thank you.

Frankly, I find the old Backup Locations method more reliable than the internal database method although the database method allows things the Backup Location method doesn't -- like flexibility with names -- adding date and time, and more. ATI11 was buggier than its predessor. ATI11's successor, ATI2009 was a bit less buggy too iirc, but used the database method.

Is the ATI2009 the same as ATI12 (which I thought was the successor to ATI11)?

The versions in order, with out going back too far, have been
ati8
ati9
ati10
ati11
then acronis changed the version naming convention to using a date instead of a mere ordinal
ati2009 (some call this ati12 but not to be confused with ati2012)
ati2010 (not to be confused with ati10)
ati2011 (not to be confused with ati11)
ati2012 (not to be confused with ati2012)
Perhaps next we'll see names like cars ;)

I see. Thank you for that list. The one I have had problems with is, indeed, ATI11. However, when I check my account I see I have ATI2009 registered. I must have accidentally have "updated" back a version. I will try to find a copy of ATI2009 and start again. I have to go out shortly so will probably have to do this tomorrow. Fingers crossed, it may cure my problem.

If you have registered a serial number for a versin, then you can download it from the acronis web site -- goto acronis.com, login, go to updates, find your version(s), download from there.
Be sure an make a backup before you install. Unistall ati11 before installing the newer version. Turn off your seciruty software before uninstalling/installing.

Hi Scott,
Everything seems to be going well. I have installed 2009 and am running a backup to see if it controls the number of backups for me. I just have one little problem, though. There seems to be a difficulty with the serial number. When I installed 2009, it asked for my serial number and the old serial number of ATI11. No problem so far and it accepted everything and said 2009 was registered but I had to re-boot.
When everything started again, I started 2009 and it told me I had a trial version and gave me the opportunity to register. I tried that but it was only asking for a 64 bit number. My serial number is 128 bit. In the end I put in half of it, it asked for the ATI11 number which I put in. It told me I was registered and worked properly.
However, if I close True Image and open it again, I am back to stage one and it is asking for the serial number once again. Any ideas, please? Perhaps I have to delete something in the registry? Perhaps I should just upgrade to ATI2012?

Hmmmm,,,,,You should be able to use the very same serial numbers under whcih the products are registered onthe acronis web site.
Could be ATI 11 left some stuff behind that's muck the ati2009 install. Try running the cleaner and then reinstall using the actual serials.
the most recent cleaners are here; one or more of them ought to work:
ati2012 http://kb.acronis.com/content/24545
ati2011 http://kb.acronis.com/content/14871
This last one should reportedly worked on ati2009.
Older cleaners don't seem to be posted.

Thanks. I have downloaded the cleanup utility but I think I will have to run it tomorrow as I am running out of time today and the backup is still running (I don't want to stop that).
I will let you know how it goes.

Well, I have good news and bad news.
The good news is that 2009 seems to be limiting the backup files as I wish.
The bad news is that it will only ever start as a trial version. I have used the cleanup utility and followed the instructions (including the regedit part, finding one file that should not have been there). I then did a clean install.
I will now try running it in trial mode and see if I can get the registration to stick from there. Otherwise I am tempted to upgrade to 2012 unless you have any better ideas.

If you can't get Acronis to make good onthe serial number for 2009, then you are at a loss for using that version, which is a same; at the very least it would be a good warm up to 2012.
If you're intersted in ati2012, I suggest uninstalling ati2009 and installing ati2012 as a trial and see if you like it -- It will look, work a bit diff. There should be a new build between now and, oh, maybe Jan, based on past history for such things, that should fix up some the of the more notable bugs. I have to say, I like ati2012 much better than ati2011, fwiw.

I have decided to go for 2012. So far so good, although I am still finding my way around it. However, it has activated correctly and I have found, eventually, the file limitation commands. I am now running a test backup. Fingers crossed.

Try setting up tasks the way you want using small sources. Once you know all the parameters you want, then create the task(s) you really want. I'm suggesting this because the database tends to be finicky about changing tasks. I.e., once you get it set, don't fiddle with a task. I don't know how persistent this issue will be in subsequent builds but it's still there in build 5xxxx of ati 2012.

Just had a strange error message: "Failed to open data stream". Knowledge base doesn't know that error message so cannot help. I have deleted it and am trying again. It seems to have gone further so far this time.

Ugh! take a look here -- unless you're going across a network I believe the prob is something in ati2012 that's a know bug:

The second attempt worked. However, it still needs fine tuning as there are little things like not getting notification when it finished to sort out.

I did get the notification, after all. It is just that I filter and fill all incoming emails and Acronis had changed the subject header subtly and my filter missed it. All solved now.

Well, it all seems to be working the way I wanted it now so I just wish to say thank you very much for all your help, Scott. It has been very much appreciated.
