Mounting causes system to freeze

Thread needs solution

Hi...

i'm using ATI 2010 13.0.7160 on Windows XP SP3 and everytime I try to mount an image my system becomes unresponsive and I ultimately have to reset.

Just a guess, but I think it may have something to do with using the Microsoft .NET Clean Tool which I had to use as some .NET updates failed to install plus I was unable to remove the Framework files via Add/Remove.

All other aspects of ATI seem to be working as normal. I can take backups, validate and explore them.

When I restore my system to a previous XP image prior to using the .NET clean tool, i'm able to mount images. However, due to the issue of not being able to update/remove .NET, i'm forced to use the tool.  After running the .NET clean tool, i'm able to reinstall .NET 1.1/SP1, 3.5 SP1, 4.0 and all relevant updates without any trouble.

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling ATI. I've also used the ATI clean tool to ensure all traces are removed before reinstalling.

I do not use Spyware Doctor.

If anyone can think of a solution, that would be great. If you need more info, just let me know.

Cheers..

Bump....can anyone help please?

A little extra information:
When attempting to mount an image, I get a message telling it successfully assigned a drive letter. However, from that moment on, i'm unaable to use Windows Explorer. I'm unable to shut down explorer with the task manager, I can even restart via the command line. The only thing I can do is reset.

Really would appreciate some help as it looks like I may have to format/reinstall Windows.

I recall having this problem on an XP system, but it may have been ATIH2009. Try to mount with R/W. After subsequently unmounting, delete the the incremental file that atih created to hold the write modifications. IIRC, that file will be created even if you don't do any writes.

Also, you don't happen to use ESET NOD32 do you? There is currently a problem with it that causes any mounts (e.g. via USB among others) to hang XP sp3.

Thanks for the reply Robert.

I decided to format/reinstall so i'm in the process of making a new XP installation CD with the latest updates/drivers etc.

With regards to your question about ESET...I do use ESS and i'm aware of the issue with v5 and ATI. I found out about that on my Windows 7 partition. I've never had v5 installed on the XP partition. At the time of the mounting issues on XP, I was using ESET Smart Security v4.2.71.2. I even tried uninstalling that but it didn't make any difference.

Anyway...should be sorted soon. Thanks again :)

Mixed results i'm afraid....

I made a new XP installation disc with all the latest updates and drivers etc. Installed XP without any problems. Installed ATI 2010, rebooted and mounting worked ok. I then went about installing all my other programs and i've just tried to mount an image again and it's freezing again and the only way to fix it is to reset.

So, it seems like the problem is caused by another program I am installing but it's going to be a pain to find out. I think i'll start again and install ATI after XP finishes installing. I'll reboot to ensure it works properly then install my apps in batches of 5 then reboot after each batch and test again.

Arghhhhhhhh

It took some time but I finally found the cause of the problems...

PerfectDisk 12 Professional v12.00.290

After installing that program and rebooting, the problem came back. Uninstalled it, rebooted and voila.

It's kinda strange though as I use the x64 version of PerfectDisk 12 on my Windows 7 partition and don't have any issues.

Oh well....gonna try using an old version 11 build as those used to play nicely with ATI.

Thanks again for the help Robert :)

If anyone from Acronis is reading, perhaps you could test this as well please?? I'm aware not many people use XP these days. I don't use it very often myself but it's kinda handy for testing and diagnostics on a dual boot system.
