RAID5 is very slow

Thread needs solution

Hello,

We are using B&R Advanced workstation to back up some of our Linux servers using RAID5. We have less than 50GB of data, but the backup seems to take 5 or 6 hours even to a USB drive. Is this normal? Are we doing something wrong?

Most of the time we use the default settings and do NOT have checked the sector by sector option.

Thanks for your help.

Hi Brad

If you could give us some extra details such as what is your source, destination devices as well as your backup server that could be of use, the reason for this is there can be allot of reasons for slow speeds.

For example if you are backing up your server located on a RAID-5 volume through a backup server (Storage node) which may have a P4 CPU to a USB drive hear is some of the bottlenecks you could face:

- RAID-5 volume might have load causing slower speeds (also ensure you are doing a image backup and not file as image will always be faster and allow OS recovery)
- Backup server and Linux servers you can check your CPU/memory load and usage to ensure they are not causing any speed issues... Acronis does some good compression but it will obviously required CPU to get this done, if you have old servers you can look at disabaling compression if space is not an issue...etc..etc (but if going to a slow USB destination compression can help increase speed!)
- When backup upto USB-2 this can cause slow backups, if backing upto a USB-3 device ensure your drivers are upto date and that you are only backing up 1-2 jobs at a time as a single USB drive will slow down dramatically when doing more than one operation at a time.
- I would also suggest doing file copies between your servers/storage to ensure your backend is capable of copying at speed that you are expecting.

All the best and good luck
