Transfer to Windows 7?

Thread needs solution

I have backed up my data which runs on XP Pro, I want to buy a new desktop running windows 7. Will I be able to use my backup to re-instate all my software and data on this new PC? Will it overwrite the Windows 7 OS and re-install the original Windows XP Pro?

How do I do this?

Your help would be appreciated before I ruin things!

P.S I have Acronis True Image home 2012 plus the expansion pack.

I recently did the same thing, moved from XP to Windows 7.

Here's what I would do:

1. Configure Windows 7 the way you want (I partitioned my drive first, and did various tweaks to Windows settings).
2. Install your applications. This may include copying over preferences or userdata files from your old system, for those applications that support that.
3. Transfer your data files (music files, word processing documents, etc.). You can do this from your Acronis backup, if that's convenient. Or, you could network the computers and transfer over the network. There are many ways to do this.

While I've read that ATI with an add-on pack is supposed to be able to move applications and settings from one system to another, I wouldn't do that. XP to Win7 is a big leap and many things differ between those two operating systems. I think it's safer to do what I suggested. Plus, you'll start to learn the ins and outs of how to use and configure Windows 7.

Renato,

If you backup your XP disk, you will have to restore it as a whole partition/disk and the will erase whatever was on that partition/disk. It will overwrite the Win 7 OS, and you will find yourself with an XP machine.
You can still use that backup to only restore the user content files. But you will have to reinstall the apps on Win 7.

I'd follow tuttle's advice.

Tuttle: I want to transfer Acronis user settings from Vista 32 to Win7 64 bit. I can easily recreate my back up jobs, but it would be nice to just copy them. Where would I find the Acronis TI user settings in Windows ? I could not find and I also tried using Windows Easy Transfer, but that is very limited tool also.

I think it would be safer to create new backup tasks once ATI is installed on your new system.

Tuttle: -just throwing out ideas and you gave me your experienced opinion, thank you,
