True Image Home 2011, can't backup from network drive

Thread needs solution

First of all, I was very satisfied witn Acronis True Image Home 2009. I was using the product to fetch different files on different servers we have here so I can bring a backup outside. We have other users here using the products to backup their laptops.

Because we started rolling out Windows 7 on the new machines, we upgraded our licenses of True Image to True Image Home 2011. Performing the backup tasks for local files is working perfectly (the users on their laptops). My problem is on a machine running Windows XP SP3 with True Image Home 2011 that I can no longer backup the files stored on network shares.

When I create the backup task, I can browse to the files on the network (within True Image), but there is no way to specify credentials as it was possible with previous versions. When I try to execute the backup task, it complains that the files are not found, that there's nothing to backup. I've tried to configure the Acronis scheduler service to run with my username as some people in this forum indicated as a solution, but this didn't work for me.

Contacted Acronis support, but after a week of repeating the same answers to the sames questions asked differently, my problem isn't solved yet. They keep asking me to go to the Windows 7 Credentials manager... I'm on XP so there's no W7 Credential Manager... they even asked to disable all the security on the network drive (not quite possible in a business context)... They asked to perform steps that are NOT available in Acronis True Image 2011... *rant warning* : Do the support people at least know the products they are supporting *rant end*

You may want to spend some time researching this via the forum search function. There have been several postings about NAS issues. One posting recently discusses changing the timeout within the task but I do not recall more specifics.

If you are a new owner of 2011, create a support ticket for official help.

I don't think you can change the timeout within the Backup process. You can limit the data transfer rate, but that's not the issue as near as I can tell. For some networks, you need an operation to be able to give its credentials and ati2011 doesn't seem to provide a function for specify what to provide -- ati2010 did, at least for when you wanted to backup TO a network location.

However, with ATI10 and ati11, I didn't need to specify any credentials when I made a task for backing up network location files and the taks ran just fine. But ati2011 can't find the files when trying to back up. It can see them to set up the process, it jsut can't see them when trying to back them up.

I am also having this problem. Anyone come across a solution yet? Interestingly, if I try to backup a single file from a network location, that generally works. However, trying to back up entire folders fails every time!

There's a few threads for this, all being ignored by Acronis. Some people mention credentials, I find it disgustingly easy to find the input to these, and test the connection int he software..it passes and then fails when you try to back up. Totally broke! Also, dont try restoring from a local drive to your main if you lose windows...you'll find the back up's are corrupt..although already verified ok, and even more readily openable after! 2010 works, 2011 is a mess. I also have the online backup...works, but forget scheduling..100% broken! Acronis really seem to have some MAJOR issues with what use to be great life saving software!

I am amazed at this. This is an issue on an Acronis sponsored web site that is being ignored by the sponsor. I am very close to giving up on Acronis. Someone (plural) has really messed up going from ATI2010 to ATI2011.

Hello all,

Thank you very much for your posts. I will definitely help you with this.

Grover and Scott, thank you very much for your help.

I would like to provide an update regarding the issue with a backup of files/folders from a network share. This was a known issue in our product and it has been fixed. Update 1 which is coming soon will have this issue addressed. I am very sorry for any inconvenience.

We will post an update in the forum when Update 1 is released.

If you have additional questions, please let me know.

Thank you.

Anton,

Thanks for addressing this. I have been running atih11 with Windows XP SP3 backing up to a D-Link DNS-323 NAS. I'm using this at home, so I don't have the problem with network credentials. But I have had many issues with Acronis giving up on the network location and failing the backup.

After reading many posts here, I'm convinced it has to do with the network timeout. For some reason, my NAS is really pokey to wake up, even from Windows. It may take 10 to 15 seconds. I have tried the suggestion to modify the tib file but cannot manage to get them open in Wordpad or Notepad.

I was just wondering (and hoping) that the "Update 1" release you mention above will also include a program option to increase the network timeout without having to hack the backup file itself.

Thanks. I think the product is great and other than my network problem have been pretty satisfied with it.

I found one alternative by googling "waking up NAS". It recommended using a small BAT file to write a simple txt file to the NAS as a "PRE" command, then deleting it (if desired) as a "POST" command.

So, this seemed great. I created the BAT file, entered it into the Acronis PRE/POST section, tested it, and then tried to close everthing.. and Acronis started asking me for Windows and NAS passwords. I don't have passwords for either, so I guess I'm done with this thread and off to another to solve that problem.

Thanks anyway, but I do recommend a network timeout option in a forthcoming release. ..

I am also having this issue, there is no way to specify credentials as it was possible with previous versions. Acronis support can you please provide a fix. I am unable to use this product without this feature

I have installed Update 1 for ATI2011. I don't see that it has fixed anything. It still asks me for authentications that don't exist and provides no override. I can't get ATI to recognize the Homegroup or Network shares on my home network, even though windows provides access and permissions with no problem.

Update 1? The latest release is build 5519. there was a subsequent release was but it was pulled. 5519 is still the latest version listed onthe product updates page.

I have build 6574 installed. I just learned from the forum that this is Update 1 and was withdrawn. So, I guess I was correct. It didn't solve anything. Back to square one.

What the heck is going on Acronis!!! Can't backup on a network drive even though I entered the Win user id and password. I really don't understand this loging business. I have another backup application that never does and is very happy to create that one file backup on the network drive unattended. The symptom starts with asking me to log in every time I change the directory, non-sense. When I initiate the backup, attended I might add, it fails miserably by saying can't find the destination plus it messes up my mapped newtwork drive assigments so much that I have to log out and back in. Never seen such a mess before this release.

I am using the latest version as of January 4 2011 and no fixes that would make it workable.

Please fix it!!!

In my case this issue has nothing to do with a NAS. It is simply a mapped network drive letter and I am unable to save a backup image to a mapped drive letter. I'd like to understand how TI Home 2011 recognizes storage on a NAS box from any other lan based storage.

In my humble opinion, if I as a user can save to a mapped drive, then TI ought to be able to save to that same mapped drive.

Gordon,

You are right. It ought to be working. In my case, I had to make sure that both computers had the same user account and password. Then ATI was able to backup to the network share (no NAS, just another computer).

Try to set the backup destination path not to a mapped drive letter, but to the full network path. Test your credentials at that time.

Thanks for the feedback but I already tried the \\ path thing weeks ago and it made no difference.

What do you mean by "both computers had the same user account"?

We are on a Windows server domain and the user accounts are stored on the Domain Controller. The target location is simply a folder on a file server on the domain. I have full access permissions in the path and can save and delete files in the path w/out issue.

Gordon,

Yes, you are in on a Domain. My settings is for a home network: each computer has the same username and password. Will not work for your.

I am completely stuck. I don't know what to do at this time. Frankly I am fed up with Acronis and their support too. The fix for network time out is cumbersome and frustrating at best and I'm an expert. I should not have to do this each time I create a new backup. I should be able to do it withing the software. Backups to an FTP site and to my NAS drives are spotty at best. I cannot reply on the software and I REQUIRE these abilities. I am on build 6696 and all the "fixes" Acronis claimed to fix are not fixed. I've been told to completely uninstall the software. This did not fix the problems. I was told to modify creditentials and this did not fix the problem. i was told to use the clean up utliity for 2011 and it corrupted things on my computer to the point I rebuilt the computer (which was recommended by Acronis as a fall back)... Well with the rebuild, backups to my NAs drive worked two times then began failing with the vague message "failed to open data stream" and I get the same exact message all the time to my FTP site. I've tested to 3 different FTP sites on three very different hosting sites to rule out supposed errors on their servers. I need Acronis to pay attention their software is not reliable. Sometimes I get the same errors backing up to the 2nd drive on my computer.

I am running Win 7 Professional, 64-bit, fully updated with latest drivers. Othe than Acronis everything else on my computer is rock solid. Problems occur when I use wired or wireless connections. My internet connection is rock solid. Using the same software on two other computers result in the same issues.

This is a most irritating issue. True Image is essentially unuseable if you want to back up to a NAS. I have mapped drives to the NAS, I can read and write to files on the NAS from my computer using any one of my apps with the strange exception of True Image. This makes no sense to me unless it is a deliberate "feature" motivating the use of the online Acronis service.

John,

Try with the latest ATI 2011 build 6857. It looks like it solves a lot of networking issues.

Unfortunately what prompted me to post after lurking in the forums for many months was that I had just in fact done that after finally finding a way to install the latest over the prior version (that bug is another thread but I couldn't install over the older version in Win7 without editing the registry) but it didn't help. I don't understand why it can't just accept and use an existing functioning mapped drive.

I have upgraded to this build and my experience with trying to backup TO a networked drive (mapped) is that I am prompted for credentials, I enter them (yes, correctly), and "test connection". It fails every time. I even tried opening the writing rights on the network drive to allowing "everyone" full control (just to see if it helps)... with no success.

Is Acronis looking into this? Again, I have mapped a drive letter to the target computer's shared drive. I am trying to to a backup on one computer to be stored on the mapped drive.

Thanks for any assistance.

Disconnect the mapped drive. From ATI, when you choose the destination, go through the network folder to navigate to the computer you are backing up to and enter your credentials at this point.

Thanks for your reply. I disconnected drive and then navigated to the folder as you instructed. This did allow me to save the destination properly. However, when I run the backup, I get an error to the effect (checking log) the file/path cannot be found.

I'm going to try again tomorrow and if still no luck, will contact you.  I may just revert to a prior version of ATI and cease upgrading.

Thanks again for your assistance!

If the mapped drive gets reconnected after you have saved the destination in ATI, it still creates a conflict. I have noticed on a laptop running Vista.

Thank you for your reply and input. I think per the advice from last night, after a reboot and for my computer to have some time to think about it, I have things working.

I did have to go through the "network" and drill-down to the drive share instead of using a mapped drive letter. I first removed the mapping per his (forgot name and it's not on this screen) advice. This worked and I was able to finally SAVE the settings. Now the path is using the UNC I think it's called, "\\fileservername\sharename". Per your input today, I see you explain why this must be done first,

I came very close to uninstalling ATI 2011 and installing an older version. I actually had the control panel / programs & features screen up and had right-clicked on ATI to uninstall... when I decided to give things one more try.

I hope Acronis addresses this issue. I don't remember anything like it being a problem in earlier versions (i.e. 8 & 9). The method I wound up having to use is non-intuitive in my opinion. I think it's perfectly normal for one to map a drive letter for reference in the backup settings, but also for general use to a networked drive.

Anyway, thanks to all who shared valuable input. I appreciate the help!

I agree this is an annoyance. Glad you made it work!

I am once again dealing with this issue. I can't imagine I'm the only one.

It's been over a month since the posting and still no update to fix it. I am not impressed with the current version of ATI.

My only thought now is to uninstall the recent version I purchased and install an older version (which didn't have this issue) and stick with that version not to update again.

FYI - uninstalled ATI 2011 and installed 2010. Network paths work just fine, regardless of pre-existing network drive mapping.

Wish I could get a refund on 2011.

Done all the above... Even installed to the lastest build 6868. While all the ideas presented in this thread work, they're not reliable beyond a few backups. So since Acronis doesn't give a crap about it's customers, anyone know of another product that claims to do all that Acronis claims AND actually works? Only reason I stay with Acronis so far is nobody else gets close to the features, but they're just pretty labels on menus right now until they actually work right.

I need to be able to any and all of the following when I chose:
Full partition backup and recovery (sector backup) with intelligence to know what to skip (unused sectors).
Full drive backup (file by file)
File by File - any and all files I want however I choose to select them. Acronis, to their credit, really do allow me to select my files. Other products claim to allow me to backup folders only to ignore files they do not believe to be important when I DO consider those same files important.

I'm with you Mark on the refund thing. I've approached them before and nothing.

Thanks for the confirmation. I'm not sure what features you're looking for, but honestly, I just need a reliable backup system to run without my babysitting it and which I can trust to "be there" for me when I have a drive crash or data general data loss. Acronis provides this for me, but its 2010 version (and even prior) does this for me. It has the features I need and I see no reason to upgrade again given my experience.

In all fairness, I should add that I researched heavily for a reliable backup solution back in 2004. I found Acronis to be the best on the market at the time and I am both surprised and disappointed an issue like this doesn't seem to gain more attention be taken care of. Again, the prior version, 2010, doesn't seem to have the "undocumented feature" :-)

I see this problem is still not fixed as of 9.25.11 I have tried setting up a network backup of a windows 7 ultimate x64 (fully updated) and using build 6868. (I dont have an older version to try) I have tried the drill down thru network option and mapping a network drive with and without the norton firewall... It fails at authentication every time, I am certain I have the correct credentials. Both systems are win 7 x64 on a shared homegroup and i have tried WiFi and wired LAN....no joy. I can read/write in both directions thru the homegroup and if the firewall is off it only makes sense to be a acronis issue and not a windows/network issue.

Atten: Acronis, get this issue fixed if you want future business. I have to agree with what most people seem to be saying- you dont seem to care about your customers.

They've moved us in to the old versions section. I'll repost in Current Version

http://forum.acronis.com/forum/29177 is the location of the new article in the forum.. If you are still experiencing the problem please post there as acronis is claiming this is fixed but it ain't!
