Can Acronis backup multiple versions constrained by space?

Thread needs solution

I would like to use backup software that will automatically:

  • Backup multiple snapshots of an entire system disk, such that I can roll my entire system back to a specified time in the past.
  • Backup multiple snapshots of individual files, such that I can recover at any time a specific file in the past.
  • Automatically do all this constrained by a particular size on the backup drive.  When the constraint size is reached, the oldest snapshots are lost automatically.

I would like this to happen automatically with minimal configuration on my part and no need to periodically manage at all, unless I choose to restore a file for example.  I don't want to mess with incremental versus differential, manually deleting old backup sets, etc.

Can Acronis do this?  This is a lot like Time Machine on the Mac.  Genie Timeline advertises this capability, and it seems to work except for the "constrained by space" part.  It just says "backup drive full" when it fills the backup drive, and there is no recourse other than adding a new drive.  It seems like the "Acronis Nonstop Backup" feature would do this, but I am not sure from the description.

Acronis Nonstop Backup works a bit like GenieTimeline: there is no way to set retention rules. Unlike GT, however, you can clean up manually the backup.

Unfortunately, Acronis retention rules don't work very well, except the one in the attached example, which is very robust.

I'd recommend you do incremental backups, with a new full after X incrementals, so that your full never gets too old to be useless for you.
You will need to estimate the space thing, so that you always have enough space for a new full before ATI deletes an older chain. Be generous with your size estimates. After a few weeks, you will get a clear idea of your needs.
