ATIH 2012 - clone to smaller HD

Thread needs solution

Hi,
my appologies if this already exists. This is my first post. I have used ATIH 2010 for years without a hitch. I reciently upgraded to 2012 because of the Sync capability. However it appears that 2012 has removed a feature that was avail in 2010.....the ability to clone to a smaller hard drive.

I use acronis as a backup tool. one of the features I use is the clone. I have a 500GB HD with only 200GB of data. I have an older 320GB HD that i clone to. I could do this with 2010 version but not 2012..This seems like a huge step backwards and this feature is something which is usually removed in trial versions not licensed versions.

Please fix this with 2012. There is no reason why i need to buy another (larger) HD when my data will fit....this is a huge dissapointment. I felt i was upgrading when I actually lost features...

Does anyone know a work around?

This feature was not removed in the 2012 version of Win dows or the bootable media. Did you try and it did not work and did you use the Windows clone or the CD clone feature? This is best done when using the bootable media.

When cloning to a smaller disk, it is better to use the manual method so user had control over partition sizes. When using the automatic method, the program controls the partition sizes.

If you tried the clone feature and it did not work, I would suggest that you check the source disk for disk errors.
A. Target disk placed inside computer in normal boot position. Source disk placed elsewhere.
B. Also suggest that the target disk be blank (unallocated space) before attempting the clone.
C. First boot after clone to have only the target disk attached. Source disk not connected.

I personally prefer to use the backup and restore method rather than the clone feature. When cloning, the source disk is at risk of user or program or hardware malfunction; plus the automatic method provides no control to the user over partition sizes.

Thanks for the info. I have a Dell XPS 1330 laptop. I have been cloning the 500GB HD to an external 320GB pocket drive for years using Acronis TIH 2010, via the windows icon in Win 7. I always use the manual mode and never had any problems. In the past i simply connected the "old clone" via USB and ran a manual clone. Acronis would warn that existing partitions on the USB drive would be deleted...i hit "OK"...then it would ask for a reboot before proceeding...again hit "OK"...a couple of hours later i had my updated clone which i store offsite.
