Advice for Windows Server Small Business 2008

Thread needs solution

Good morning,
I need some advice.
At home I have a server with Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2008 + SQL Server 2005/2008.
I want to buy a product Acronis to backup the two hard drives in Raid1 from boot CD/DVD, without installing the program on the operating system.
What product do you recommend?

Thanks
Antonio

Hello Antonio Iodice,

Thank you for posting this question in our forum. I am happy to assist you.

The related product is Acronis Backup & Recovery 11.5 Advanced Server SBS Edition

Please be aware, that the backup of MS Exchange or MS SQL Server in granular mode only works, if the product is installed on the system. A backup using the bootable media also creates a consistent backup of the system.

You are open to download a trial version first. See Trial Version Limitations of Acronis Products for more information. After registering the trial version in your account, you where able to download a bootable media in ISO format. Use this trial ISO disk to check if your RAID system is recognized. If not, you need to use a Windows based media, like WinPE.

If you need additional assistance, navigate to our Acronis Support website and click at Step 1 on Presales/Licensing Question. At the bottom of this page you then have an active Live Chat. To start the Live Chat, click on Chat Now.

If there is anything else I can do for you, please let me know.

Thank you.

Hello Peter and thank you for your reply.

I would make three more questions:

1) For my server (Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2008) can I also use "Acronis Backup & Recovery 11.5 Server for Windows" or "Acronis Backup Recovery 11.5 Advanced Server for Windows"? (so not the specific version for SBS).

2) Can I use the "Universal Restore" using the boot cd, both to make the backup and to restore it?

3) Since the server has a RAID1 array with two hard drives, I have to back up both hard disks or only one hard disk?

Thank you very much

Hello Antonio Iodice,

Thank you for your reply.

To your questions:

  1. Yes, you also can use the standalone version, but please be aware, that the standalone version does not include the Agent for Exchange or MS SQL.
  2. Yes, the Acronis bootable media contains also the feature to backup and restore the entire system offline.
  3. If the Acronis bootable media can see the RAID system, as it is (one drive, not the physical drives), you do not need to backup the underlaying drives. From the Windows installed agent, you only will see the logical result of your RAID as it is defined.
