Backup physical Windows server on virtual ESXi 5 machine

Thread needs solution

In the ACRONIS portfolio it would be very useful to have a following functionality:
To make a backup ( full and incremental ) of physical Windows server on virtual VMWare ESXi 5 machine.
In case of physical server failure it should be possible to run this virtual machine immediately with the up-to-date state and data.
After fixing the physical server and restoring the last backup file it should be possible to synchronize its state
with the current state of the virtual machine to enable the physical server to take over the role of main server.
This kind of functionality I have tested with the PlateSpin product of Novell.

Hello Jacek D,

Thank you for posting this question in our forum. I am happy to assist you.

With Acronis Backup & Recovery 11.5 you are able to convert your backup every time in an automated process. See this user guide for more information. If you are using any edition except the Acronis Backup & Recovery 11.5 Virtual Edition, you are able to convert to a new virtual machine, like the VMware Workstation. In order to start this machine in your ESX(i) 5 environment, you need to perform some steps manually. See this article from our knowledge base.

When using the Acronis Backup & Recovery 11.5 Virtual Edition on your ESX(i) 5 environment and Acronis Backup & Recovery 11.5 Advanced Server for backing up your physical server, then you are able to convert into a virtual machine running directly in your environment. See this article from our knowledge base. At step 6 you can find the screenshot, that shows, where to choose the ESX(i) host.

In order to bring them back after using the virtual machine for a while, you need to create a new backup from the virtual guest and restore it, using Acronis Universal Restore to the physical machine. See this article for detailed instructions.

If you need additional assistance, please create a system report of the affected machine and contact support. You will find all available support options in our Customer handbook.

If there is anything else we can do for you, please let me know.

Thank you.
