Determining if Acronis Backup 11.7 will work or if we need to start over
We currently have a 2040 NETAPP appliance, it takes snapshots from 5 VM's and 3 windows servers and a SQL server, those snapshotws are backed up using backup exec 15 to a Quantum i80 LTO tape scalar.
The netapp we have is approximately 5 years old. and we have been told it's EOL is December 2017.
The Quantum scalar is particularly fussy and can randomly stop communicating with the server over a minor power blip, a network connection blip or just because it wants to. Switching out the tapes involves a trip to the storage location, inserting the tapes and then and inventory of the tapes inserted in the quantum (this can take up to 8 hours) then the actual restore job which can take up to 24 hours, make sure all data required has been restored, then export the tapes, run another tape inventory and take another trip to storage and replace the tapes. which in itself isn't a lot of work but I am responsible for 2 schools and a maintenance dept as well as the backups so its a fairly time intensive process.
We purchased a QNAP NAS tvs-1271u-rp with the understanding it would work with our NETAPP and with the intent it would be faster and less time away from my schools. So it will connect but what used to take at the most 16 hours takes 30 hours to 3 days and with the number of servers we have that is just too long and a failure after 3 dfays is frustrating..
We downloaded Veeam to see if it would work and we are running into the SAME issue with speed and it won't connect to the NETAPP to grap the snapshot then save it to the qnap. And restore it seems to only want to restore the entire VM.
In a simple copy and paste manual backup it takes less than an hour to save the data that used to take 16 hours by tape or over three days using backup exec or Veeam, so it shouldn't be a network issue.
I've download Acronis Backup 11.7 and what we want in an ideal world is for it to connect to our NETAPP appliance, and backup only the data and save it onto our Qnap. We don't need the entire VM backed up we have a template saved and can spin up a new server using the template in minutes. But the Data is what is important and the Data is what we would want to have backed up and restored and we'd like to be able to restore the actual file or folders that are corrupted or been deleted.
So I guess my questioin is would Acronis Backup 11.7 be the correct product for us?
