Large catalog size

Thread needs solution

Hello,

I'm using Acronis Backup Advanced with a tape device and have the option "Enable file recovery from disk backups stored on tapes" turned on. I understand that will take a relatively large amount of disk space to store that info. However, I also have the option set to delete backups older than 15 days. I assumed that would also clear the data from the disk as well but it doesn't appear to be doing that. My folder containing the catalog just continues to grow. Is there an option I am missing somewhere that will clear that data when the data on the tape is removed?

Thanks!
Steve

Hi Steve,

Thank you for your question! The entries in the folder TapeLocation should be removed after backups are completely deleted from tapes. More likely backups are not deleted, but marked for deletion according to specified retention rules. It happens because a tape can be overwritten only completly, all backups on this tape should be marked for deletion. If you for example use a GFS scheme, then backups will have dependencies and cannot be removed untill there are dependent backups on other tapes. You can erase a tape manually and check the size of TapeLocation after that.

Thank you,

Hello,

Sorry for the lengthy delay.  I have erased several tapes that had backups marked for deletion - including tapes that had only a single (full) backup on them.  The tape location folder was not reduced in size.  Is there a bug with the version i have installed (11.5 Update 4)?

If it makes a difference, I did follow your KB article on moving the tape location folder using the "junction" command.  It has been setup that way from the beginning however.

Thanks for any input you can provide.

Steve

Hello Steve,

We've discussed your issue internally, it seems to be a known issue with the TapeLocation not cleaning up it's contents. I would suggest updating to the latest build 43994 where the issue is fixed and re-creation of the TapeLocation folder (delete %PROGRAMDATA%\Acronis\BackupAndRecovery\TapeLocation and rescan tapes to create new TapeLocation).

Thank you,

Thank you for the feedback Ekaterina!  One additional question, since I've changed the location of the TapeLocation folder following this KB article https://kb.acronis.com/content/27445.  Should I delete just the contents of the TapeLocation folder or should I delete the actual folder itself also and then create a new folder and  junction point?

Thanks again!

Steve

Hello Steve,

I would delete contents of both the original and replicated folder. Have you installed the latest build already?

Thank you,

Hi Ekaterina,

Yes, I've installed the latest build and after rescanning the tapes it appears to be working correctly now.  Looking at the log I can see the following (which I did not see prior to the update):

25   Information   11/18/2015 7:39:22 PM   The backups created on the following dates have been deleted: '1/19/2015 10:42:36 AM', '1/26/2015 11:06:24 AM', '1/27/2015 9:17:39 AM', '1/28/2015 9:13:07 AM', '1/29/2015 9:19:44 AM', '2/6/2015 9:25:26 AM', '2/7/2015 9:16:53 AM', '10/26/2015 7:28:26 AM', '10/31/2015 8:08:51 AM'.

Thank you for your help!

Steve

Hello.

I've too the 11.5 update 4 version and i think i have same problem on backup. We dont have library tape but disk library.

The problem was that backup marked as "to be deleted" was not cleaned automaticaly after the retention period.

If i've correctly read, i have to update acronis backup to latest version (do exist a documentation to make a good update ???) and after recreate "storage location" and delete all the ancient backup ????

Thanks for your response

Hello patrice lavielle,

The issue seems to be different in your case. Could you please provide us with the screenshots from the vault view, backup plan settings and exect model of device, where backups are stored. Habe you checked the logs? Are there any errors or warnings?

Thank you,

Hello. Thank you for your help.

I'm new to the soft.

I join to this post some sreen capture form one of our two server (acronis.zip)

the "first" vault was 6 raid5 disk (approx 2 To). The "second" vault (second storage on backup definition) was a classic NAS.

I thank you in advance

Hello patrice lavielle,

Thank you for provided information! First of all please re-index the vault as described in following article: https://kb.acronis.com/content/37800

Please have a look at this part of documentation, which provides detailed explanation on why backups with dependencies cannot be delted.

Thank you,
