Ok to run backup with VSS disabled?

Thread needs solution

Hello,

I recently installed Acronis on Windows Server 2003 and it would not complete a backup. After reading up on the forum, I disabled the VSS service and it backed up successfully. My question is: Would there be any issue if I were to leave the VSS service disabled for good to keep running Acronis? We really need backups to run on a daily basis. Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hello Juan,

Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service helps to create consistent backup of VSS -aware applications (usually databases).

So if you don't have any databases on your server you can safely disable this option. Here you can find more information about it.

And even VSS doesn't function properly on your system, you can always use pre- and post- backup/snapshot commands to stop and start your applications.

Thank you.
