Procedure to backup Windows 2003 domains controller

Thread needs solution

As I have to upgrade my domains controller server from Windows Server 2003 to Windows Server 2012 R2 on the same server. Before of that, I would like to create an Acronis image backup on the existing domains controller server? May I got the backup procedure on that especially what the file(s) need?

Hello LD BPVD,

Thank you for your posting! Under this link you will find best practices of backing up a domain controller. And this section describes the recovery scenarios.

I would also recommend you to test Acronis Backup Advanced for Active Directory. This edition includes a special Agent for Active Directory (can be obtained as an Add-on to your existing installation), which allows you to protect a domain controller with special AD-aware options. More information on Single-Pass backup you can find here.

Thank you,

You are going to waste a lot of time using the same server. It probably won't be worth it. My suggestion would be to get a new server, join the domain and make the new server the FSMO master. Then you can take your time and slowly move things off the old server. This way all your data stays live and you don't have to do anything to the workstations. The cost of a new entry level server today shouldn't be much more than $2,000 and you could easily cost yourself much more trying to re-use the same server.

The new server is purchased, but the domain controller migration exercise is needed. Our domain controller from server 2003 upgrade to the server 2012 R2 as well. Therefore, the Arconis full backup is required to avoid the migration exercise failure.

Hello LD BPVD,

Acronis Backup Advanced for Windows Server does not include the Agent for Active Directory, only Agent for Windows. You could buy an Add-on to activate this functionality.

Thank you,
