Restoring backups to VMWare Workstation set of files - No network

Thread needs solution

After a few lengthy support calls I've decided to bring the problem I'm facing to the Acronis Forums. I'm currently conducting a run through of our DR procedure and have come up against what I see as a floor in a fundamental feature of Acronis Backup 11.5. We backup our DC's and Mailserver to VM's each night by script using VMWare Converter. In the event of a major disaster we can then simply copy these over to our DR server, and then power them up using VMWare Workstation 11. We then have another sever we network with the physical server mentioned, again running a copy of VMware Workstation. On here we plan to restore the backups of high importance Workstations of which backups are produced using Acronis. However, when restoring any of these machines to a VMWare set of files, when booted, the network card isn't installed. Has anyone come across this issue before? Thanks

Hello Anthony,

When we create backups of physical machines, we collect meta-data information about the available NICs on this machine. When converting to a VM, new virtual NIC devices are created to mirror the original ones.

The first thing you want to check here is, without even booting the new VM, if a new virtual network device is created on this converted VM. Can you clarify if this is the case? If not, please also confirm that the original physical machine has an enabled NIC (non-WiFi)

Thank you.

Hello,

Having conducted a fresh restore to VMWare Workstation set of files, before booting the machine I checked the configuration of the VM. It does show the Network Adapter and this is set to Bridged (Automatic). When the machine is powered on the Network Adapter in Device Manager is shown with a red cross through the icon and therefore has no networking capabilities.

All the backups are of physical machines with enable NIC's (non-WIFI).

Thanks

Hi Anthony,
as far as I see you have an open support case for this problem. Since we need to conduct an investigation basing on information from your environment, please wait for updates in the support case.
Thank you for your understanding!

Hi,

We have recently conducted another disaster recovery run through, and following advice that this was fixed in the latest release were shocked to find this is still a current problem.

If someone could provide any further assistance with this problem it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Hello Henry,

As a workaround you can set up a new empty VM, boot it with Acronis Bootable Media and recover your backup as you would do in a physical environment. If you want to investigate the issue with the automatic conversion to VM, please raise a support ticket

Thank you,
