Hyper-V Generation 2 VMs

Thread needs solution

Any news on when generation 2 VMs will have full support by Acronis?

Thanks

*Edit: I've just done some testing and I've managed to restore a 2012 R2 Gen2 UEFI SCSI VM to a Gen1 BIOS IDE VM and it booted!!

I didn't think windows was able to convert from Gen2/UEFI to Gen1/BIOS?!

No ones got any information regarding this? Seems a waste to have to log a support call for a simple question.

Most other backup products have support for Gen2 VMs now.

Hi David,

Sorry for the delayed reply. I've made some internal research and found that the support for Gen 2 VMs has been added into Acronis Backup Advanced 11.5 Update 3 released several months ago, while the current version is Update 5 which contains the fix (previously backup of such VMs had failed). The confusing part is the documentation which specifically refers to the fact that Generation 2 VMs are not supported (http://www.acronis.com/en-us/support/documentation/AcronisBackup_11.5/#… ). This is not true and this is also confirmed by your testing. We will correct the documentation to reflect the correct information.

Thank you.

My understanding from update 3 is that partial support for Gen2 VMs was added.

I am still unable to restore a Gen2 VM to a Gen2 VM. Acronis always wants to convert it to Gen1.

Hi David,

Yes, you are correct (and I was wrong in my previous comment). The whole story is the following:

- Before Acronis Backup 11.5 Update 3 backup of Gen 2 VM has always failed
- In Update 3 backup of Gen 2 VM has become possible, however upon recovery it is converted into Gen 1 VM. Nevertheless the bootability of the system is correctly restored for both BIOS and UEFI systems.

We're planning to change the behavior in the next version of Acronis Backup (12) where recovery of the VM will preserve the VM generation setting where applicable. The exception would be if you migrate from Hyper-V 3.0 to Hyper-V 2.0 which doesn't support Gen 2 - in this case conversion to Gen 1 will still be performed.

Thank you.

Hi David,

Acronis Backup 12 is planned for the next year (2015), though I cannot (not allowed to) share yet the exact time-frame.

Thank you.
