Hi!

The problem is that there are no kernel headers for 2.6.32.43-0.4.1.xs1.8.0.835.170778xen installed on the host. These headers are required for compilation.

HOWEVER you should note the following:

Installation of Acronis Backup Agent onto Citrix XenServer is not supported because XenServer itself by default doesn't support installation of any 3rd party packets: 'yum' packet manager allows installation from Citrix-approved repositories only. In your case there seems to be some customized XenServer which allows this, but nevertheless it is quite dangerous to install any 3rd party onto the host.

Acronis Backup Advanced for Citrix XenServer product supports backing up VMs on guest level, i.e. by installing agents inside the VMs. There is a special license check added which allows you to install unlimited number of agents onto XenServer VMs with single Acronis license.

Thank you.

Acronis Virtualization Program Manager

When backing up my windows vm. I open up my management console and that machine is listed under all machines with agents. Shouldnt this be listed under virtual machines? Right now I do not see any benefits spending the extra money for acronis for xenserver rather than getting the 2 separate licenses for my windows vm and linux vm. If I cannot backup the host server what are the benefits of this software package? It doesnt seem like I can easily restore to a vm either. As of right now, I would need to boot up a new VM with acronis boot disk and restore that way?

Hi,

As mentioned above the main idea of Acronis Backup Advanced for XenServer license is to allow installation of _unlimited_ number of agents onto VMs running on XenServer host - and yes these machines are treated as physical ones which is why you see them under physical machines list (also that's why the restore process implies using a bootable media). In your case if you had for example 3 VMs running on the host then you would need 3 licenses of Acronis Backup Advanced for Windows/Linux, while with XenServer license you just need one.

P.S. In the next versions we plan to add agent-less backup for XenServer (it has high priority) in order to make the support of this platform more transparent for our customers.

Thank you.

Acronis Virtualization Program Manager

Will I be able to upgrade to these new versions without paying for another license?

Hi,

The upgrades of all corporate Acronis products (Acronis Backup line) is free for all customers who have active maintenance (support) contract. 1 year maintenance contract is always included when you purchase new licenses. That is, by default you are eligible for free upgrade within 1 year period since your original product purchase.

Thank you.

Acronis Virtualization Program Manager

Well, I bought Acronis Universal intending to use it on XenServer because I do want to backup my host machine and the VM's inside the Hypervisor. After much struggling on the chat I've given up.

Looking through the forums I've found this thread and sincerely this is unacceptable!

We have a mixed pool of virtual machines, running different versions of Linux, Windows (even an old instance of Windows NT4) and all of our core network services run on FreeBSD VMs.

It would be OK to use Acronis on *unlimited* guest if it supported FreeBSD. But it's not the case.

I'm really frustrated right now, but there's nothing I can do.

I agree 100% They shouldn't offer a product that doesnt work with what its licensed for.
