Hyper-V Server and VM backup question.

Thread needs solution

Thanks in advance for your help.

I have Hyper-V running as a service under Windows 2012 R2 on an Intel R2308WTTYSR server system. The system contains 8 hot swap 2.5"/3.5" drive bays and these are connected to an Intel RAID Controller RS3DC080. I have the Host operating system installed on a Raid 1 array consisting of two 128GB samsung SSDs (C:). I have two Server 2012 R2 virtual machines running on the host. The VM data is stored on its own Raid 10 array consisting of four 2TB SAS HDDs (D:).

My question is...Do I need to backup the VM Data partiton on the host if I am already backing up the VM's separately? I do not want to absorb cloud storage space unnecessarily.

Thank you for your assistance.

Hi Paul,

As long as your D: volume doesn't contain any other data except VM data (virtual disks and configuration) you can backup only the VMs (via Agent for Hyper-V) and skip backing up the D: volume on host level. It makes sense to back up only system drive ( C: ) from the Hyper-V host in addition to VM backups to get full protection.

Thank you.
