Acronis virutal Appliance Error

Thread needs solution

I installed the virtual Appliance (v12.5) from the Homepage in a Vshpere 6.7. When i try to backup the 2019 Server the error is:

failed to quiesce the virtual machine

When i try a Snapshot over Vshpere Console everything works fine. Any ideas?

Hello Steffen,

we recommend reinstalling or updating your VMware tools to fix the issue as described in this KB article .

When i try a Snapshot over Vshpere Console everything works fine. Any ideas?

Do you mean that you back up the server with vSphere Console with the help of Acronis Agent installed there?

Already tried reinstalling vmware tools, no effect.

no, when it try a snapshot from vshpere and click enable quience snapshot there is an error too. can acronis make a backup with taking quience snapshots?

Hi Steffen,

Acronis Backup can use both quiesced and non-quiesced VMware snapshots to read VM data from. By default quiescing is enabled in backup plan: "Backup Options"->"Volume Shadow Copy (VSS) for Virtual Machines". If this option is enabled then there are 3 attempts made to trigger quiesced snapshot (we send a request to vSphere to create the snapshot) and if all attempts fail, then there is a failback to non-quiesced snapshot. If you disable the option then there will be non-quiesced snapshot performed always. Backup captured using non-quiesced snapshot will capture VM in crash-consistent state (as if it was forcibly powered off/rebooted) and usually such backups are still valid, since most of modern OSes can sustain forcible reboots/poweroffs.

Note that Acronis Backup relies on VMware ability to capture VM snapshots - if snapshot fails on VMware level, then there is not too much we can do until this issue is fixed (except failing over to non-quiesced snapshots as descrbed above).

Thank you.

Hello Steffen,

by default, the quiesced snapshot should be created when the backup operation is started. Snapshot creation is performed by VMware API.

If you experience problems creating a backup of a virtual machine when the operation fails with the error that you indicated in your first post, then I would recommend that you thoughtfully follow instructions in this KB article

There are references to the VMware Knowledge Base that can help you to resolve this problem. Also, you can involve VMware support team to investigate the problem with the snapshot creation.

Acronis software can also back up virtual machines without using VSS

However, fixing the problem with creating a quiesced snapshot will make you sure that the data is consistent.
