Instant Restore and Replication

Thread needs solution

Hi!

What's the difference between instant restore and replication?

What's the best practice for each restoration procedure?

Thanks!

Hi,

The main difference is that instant restore (aka Run VM from backup or "Mount VM from backup") does not consume the space on the production storage (datastore), since it reads the machine data right from the backup. VM replica consumes the same amount of space on the datastore as was consumed by the original machine. The drawback from using Instant restore is lower performance of the mounted VM in comparison with replica due to overhead since data needs to be read from the archive instead of fast production datastore.

Concerning best practices, you can check the chapter 7 from our Best Practices guide - see link.

Thank you.
