Questions about MS SQL backup

Thread needs solution

Hello Everyone,

I'm trying to deploy Acronis Backup 12.5 for MS SQL 2016 servers. On every server are ca. 35-40 sql instances.
When I use Backup plan for Files/folder everything seems o.k. - I just choose DATA folder in every sql instance folder. But for MS SQL it should be better to use dedicated plan, right?

So if I choose Microsoft SQL backup plan I found some issues, which I don't know how to resolve. Please help :)

1. Is it possible to add whole sql instance at once to a backup plan, not just strict database? It is a problem, when databases are added/deleted.
2. How to refresh in Acronis a list of databases in sql instance? When I add or delete a database, for many hours Acronis still see old database or can't see new one. And SQL backup plan is trying to backup deleted database.
3. How to mount database (as read only) to SQL server directly from backup? According to this comparision it should be possible.

I couldn't find anything about it in manual or in Acronis KB.

Hello, Mati,

Welcome to Acronis forum! I will be happy to answer your questions.

  1. To choose the data you want to backup, please click Devices – Microsoft SQL and choose the source.
  2. Each SQL instance has its own ID, so when in a backup plan you specify, for example, two instances with IDs XXX and XXXX, save changes and add a new instance XXXXX, Acronis Backup 12.5 will not recognize that changes and will not backup the new instance. To workaround that problem, you will need to choose “Entire machine” in “what to backup” and NOT activate application-aware backup. In this case Acronis Backup 12.5 will backup the machine as a whole, including all the present instances. However, this method has its cons: You will not be able to restore SQL objects granularly
  3. You can recover the databases as a set of files. Please follow these steps from an article.

I hope this answers your questions. If you have any concerns – do not hesitate to contact me again.
