Really not possible with 12.5 ?!?!

Thread needs solution

Well today I tried to upgrade our network to 12.5 Advanced.

I have one physical server (Win 21012R2) with 4 Hyper-V machines in it.
All Workstations are runninf WIn10 in the most recent version

I encountered the following problems:

- Some of my workstaitions cannot be installed remotely...no idea why as all have the same settings.
- It is not possible to specify which components to be installed remotely. So If a machine needs 2 Agents (i.e. a server needs agent for SQL and normal Windows) no remot install is possible.
- It seems as if the password for the mail server is not stored. I must enter it each time I press "Save" (although the dots hiding the plain text are still the same)

These are minor things...but 2 big issues:
- I tried to attach the "old" backups from my 11.7 system via the storage node....is there really NO CATALOGING POSSIBLE ?!?! It is ONE version step.....
- Really NO WOL feature? I used to wake up some machines for backing them up in the night....So any ideas how I can manage this ?

I´m rather disappointed as these features are real basics or is this only my opinion ?

Regards
Sven

I had run into a problem with the prior version of 12.5 (U1) where I could not remotely install agents there were over a WAN connection but everything on the LAN worked fine. So there was some sort of issue relating to the WAN speed, probably a file copy timeout or something.

The solution for me was to install the product locally/interactively and it worked fine. I actually have a product that performs software distribution so I created a batch file distribution package and it pushes out to clients over WAN connections fine now.

Hi,

For remote installation customizations (to select only specific components to be installed for example) I'd recommend to check https://kb.acronis.com/content/59780 article which describes the concept and it is applicable to mass-scale agents deployments either via CLI or via Group Policy - this should be the best method to use.

Concerning e-mail server password issue - it makes sense to investigate it with our support team involved as likely it's specific to environment (I couldn't find/recall any similar issues reported recently).

The cataloging on an existing location can be enabled on demand from Backups list: select location and click Edit button to apply cataloging service (in 12.5 there is a new ElasticSearch-based one catalog functionality) and enable the corresponding switch:

The Wake-on-LAN functionality was indeed not implemented in Acronis Backup 12.5 and was postponed until future updates (internal feature ID: ABR-122336), though there is no ETA yet. As a workaround you can use any tool capable for broadcasting the "magic" packet (example) and set it to wake up the required machines at proper times (like 10 minutes before the backup).

Thank you.

Hello Vasily,

thanks for the information.

Does the enabling of cataloging on a stroage location with backups in 11.7 format has an effect ?
The manual states:

The following data cannot be displayed in the catalog:
Data from the encrypted backups
Data from encrypted managed locations
Data backed up to tape devices
Data backed up to the cloud storage
Data backed up by product versions earlier than Acronis Backup 12.5

Hi Sven,

Yes, the backups created with 11.7 version won't be catalogued, but new backups created by 12.5 will be included into catalog.

Note that you can still browse any files/other objects inside the backups created by 11.7 - there is no need in catalog for granular recovery of data (catalog will help only if you need to perform cross-archives or cross-machines search).

Thank you.

Thanks for the information,

So if I understand you right, cataloging is not necessary if my Archive has the principle "one machine in one Archive" ?

Is there a possibility to start cataloging on demand?
If yes I would disable the catalog and if I need it I would do the cataloging.

Hi Sven,

Yes, you're correct - if your machines are backed up into different archives then you won't need catalog for granular browsing.

The cataloging can be started/stopped when editing the backup location (as shown on the screen shot I've posted above), so yes, technically it can be enabled/disabled for specific locations. Disabling catalog won't block you from browsing granular data within the archive from "Backups->Locations" web console UI section - there will be onlly "Backups->Catalog" menu missing if you uninstall the "Acronis Catalog" component.

Thank you.
