Backup & Recovery 10 Trial-Request for credentials for tape drive
I see from forum post 12303 that this has been brought up before, but it does not show how or if it ever was resolved.
The trial seems to be ok until when asked where to backup to. When I select the LTO 1 drive. I am prompted to enter a user name and password. To date this is what I have tried and my system setup.
PC is a standalone workstation.
User account has only one "CMK" as system administrator (GUEST is disabled).
Initial installation of XP Pro was without a password, but I have since added one thru user accounts to see if I could appease the management console. It did not help.
I have tried to reinstall several times. To no avail. I have used the Acrionis Cleanup Tool. No change. I have used the cleanup tool + a registry cleaner + manually examing such places as documents and settings. Also to no avail.
I have just sent RegInfo.zip to technical support and am awaiting a reply, but due to the time lag between response, though to ask here also.
I also tried "Use and existing account" and it accepted the entry T3400\CMK as a valid credential during the installation. But it will not accept it as the valid credentials for the tape drive.
Question: Where (or what file) is the console manager looking at to get the answer it wants when it asks for a user name and password for the selected tape drive? I asked tech support, but they ignored the question the a earlier reply.
Hope someone can help resolve this very frustrating issue.

Hi dev-anon.
The Acronis Knowledgebase shows that on topic 3303 there is an Acronis Managed Machine Service, is this one in the sale you refer to? Doing a search of the Microsoft Knowledgebase, I found zero references using search word Managed Machine Service(s). In either case, I still would like to determine where (MS or Acronis) MMS is looking so that I can enter vales it thinks are valid. They have to be somewhere so the (Acronis or Microsoft) MMS can verify entries. This is most frustrating because there are very little options available for the use of tape as a backup media (and I have a bunch of tapes).
Thanks.
Craig.

It's Acronis service (a.k.a MMS). Did you try to use NTbackup to check that the whole setup works?

dev-anon:
No, have not. I looked at the requirements and it seems to be command line driven. I did not now what switches were important or needed I opted for the gui interface. Will go back and give ntbackup another look.

February 15, 2011
For those who are unfortunate enough to have a computer configuration as I do, (see forum post 12303 for starters), here is a summary to date of events.
My situation has been elevated as of about 2/11/11 with my first email being received today, 2/15/11. I have only five days (I believe) remaining on my second trial download. As of this writing, Acronis tech support has been able to resolve my issue (why or what answers, mms wants as authentic credential when selecting an LTO 1 tape drive).
Final status: Unresolved
Primary reason (in my estimation): Inability to determine just where Acronis MMS is looking, so that we can extract the user name and password Ancronis MMS would deems as valid so it will accept the LTO tape drive as authenticated.
Resolution:
I see no reason to believ that this will be resolved with a short time. To save everyone from wasting more time, I have resorted to doing a manual backup using two 1 terabyte externally mounted hard drives attached thru the USB ports.
Appreciate everyones help. We tried.

Hey Craig,
has there been any resolution on this issue. I have had similar experience with Workstation running XP Professional and an HP Lutrim 1 - SCSI tape. It works fine using NTbackup so I know the tape is OK. When I select tape as option of where to backup it asks for credentials. There are only two accounts on the workstation and neither of them are accepted.
Just wondering how you went as I really need something (other than NTBackup) which will allow compression and selection of folders for daily backup to tape. Most software now doesnt appear to use tape. Only have about 5 days left on trial.

Hi Jenny.
No, my issue was never resolved. The second trial periods expired and I never requested a new one. Acronis was kind enough to offer a telephone session with a second tier technician but being at work required me to take vacation days, which I never opted to do.
Good Luck.

Thanks Craig, I ended up with a chat session and the second technician fixed the problem.
I had reinstalled the software (which seemed to be their first recmendation) and then it was a matter of using the administrator account for all priviledges and making sure that this was a memeber of the backup users group. Also I then had to remove storagecraft (which I had installed after not getting acronis to run) reboot and so far OK. I hope it stays that way.

Just curious Jenny. My situation may have been different in that my workstation is a stand-a-lone computer. Was your workstation a stand-a-lone computer? By stand-a-lone I mean it is not connected to any network, hence no domain administrator. It has only one user who is assigned administrative rights. There is no password to log onto the computer. I did not try assigning the user to the backup users group. Interesting though. Thanks for the information. I may try again as I have a pile of LTO tapes.

No it is also a standalone (well in a workgroup but no domain). Using the computer managment, local users and groups I assigned a password to the administrator (built in account) and added to backup operators group. If you look under control panel, user accounts there is only one user on this PC with admin rights but this is different area to what I was talking about.

Hi Jenny.
Hey, many thanks for the reply. There may be hope yet. I'll explore a bit more any may give the software another try. Maybe the key here is the applet administrative tools.
Take care.

Hi Craig,
I feel like I may have mislead you, the backup worked once and then kept asking for credentials again.
I have given up and gone back to NTBackup.

Hi Jenny:
Really appreciate your follow-up.
Perhaps Acronis will read this and do something about it ( my money is other things though).
Nothing like the good old batch file and a $100 hardware setup.
Thank you kindly.
