Black screen with minus twinkling sign at the top left

Thread needs solution

Hello,
At had a crash on my hard disk, on a Windows Server 2003 partition (on the other partition I have XP Pro)
Fortunately I made an image disk of that Windows Server 2003 partition, so I expected to restore it. The restore ran well and finished by the happy message "Restore successful".
My boot.ini is just in the reverse order: XP first, then Win Server 2003. I don't care but when I try to select Windows Server 2003, I get a black screen with a minus twinkling sign at the top left.
What did I miss to load Win Server 2003?
Thanks for your help

I think Server2003 can't find it's boot files.

You'll need to run the Server2003 rescue disk to get the BCD back into kink.

I'd guess that the Server BCD entry had a static path to the boot files. What you might need to do once you are up and running again is to make this a relative path, then if the files get moved to a different part of the drive on another restore it should be able to find itself.

The same problem can happen with Vista and W7.

Thanks Colin for this diagnostic,
But, in this area, I'm a very beginner: I don't know how to run a Server 2003 rescue disk, how to make a relative path, what is the BCD... So could you give me the way for an URL where I could find a detailed process (step by step) which describes all these operations.
Thanks again
Gerard

Hello all,

Thank you very much for your posts.

bodgy,

Thank you very much for your assistance.

Gerard Ducouret,

I will try my best to resolve this issue.

I would recommend using the Windows 2003 Server CD, go to the recover console and try the bootcfg /rebuild command.

I would recommend checking the following article in our Knowledge Base that explains in detail how to perform this operation.

Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Thank you.
