Can not import Machines in AMS could not establish a trust relationship
I installed the agent on a remote systems, and set it up with a domain account, I attempt to add the machine using eith the same domain account or my own and I get a failed trust error. I have replicated this on two systems. Firewall is not on, both systems are Windows XP, MMS is running and AMS is running on the server.

I can connect directly without a problem, how do I know if it is talking to the license server?

If you can connect directly, license is ok - if it were not, the connection would be refused.
You can try to add the machine from the agent's side - connect to machine directly, in options->machine options select 'managed by management server' (not an exact wording), specify AMS address.

Jay, dev-anon is right. I just wanted to add that such error occurs also in case the components are of the different builds. Please check the build number on the Agent and the AMS, and, if needed, install the latest one.
