cannot mount backup

Thread needs solution

I have a full backup and 3 incrementals. All but the last incremental are labelled as being marked for deletion so 'no operation can be performed on the backup'. Why?

This is a shame(!) since I need to recover a corrupted file from the full backup. The corrupted file has subsequently been replaced with a fresh empty file and of course that's what the incremental backups will contain.

The latest incremental can allegedly be mounted but fails every time with an error (screenshot attached) saying the 'module has been already initialized'. Hard reboot makes no difference so what did the initializing and when is anybody's guess. The backup verifies successfully but there seems to be no chance of recovering the file I want.

Needless to say, I'm not impressed, I paid top money for this 'server' product and the first time I need to use it in anger (pun not intended but very apt!) it fails at the first and second hurdle.

What is the point of an incremental backup if you can only access the contents of the final one (except that you can't even do that)?

Any suggestions anybody? If I were to delete the incrementals might I get back to the point where the full backup is mountable? If it were, I somehow doubt it would mount (why would it behave better than the incremental)...

Any suggestions welcome.

I think it's time to go and look at the competition. I've use Acronis for years and have several paid copies of differing vintages but with every release it seems to get more expensive and less reliable.

Oh well rant over, what's seven months of lost sent mail to cry about. Email backup failed for other reasons and now my trusty last resort is, er, not trusty.

If it's marked for deletion, the backup plan had retention rules that can't be applied right now, but the oldest backups must be deleted according to them. If the backup is located on local folder or newtork share, you can doubleclick on the .tib file in windows explorer and copy-paste the required files.

Hi Fedor

I'm speechless!

I had no idea you just double-click a .tib file and just wade in there and help yourself. I've just restored all my lost email and I'm a very happy man - if I could buy you a beer I would but instead I'll have two - yours and mine.

It seems fabulous that the solution was right there under my nose and yet somehow crazy that the Acronis GUI just throws meaningless errors at me if I try to get at the same information through there.

The front door is locked and surrounded by aggressive security guys who won't let you in (even though it's your own door!) but the the back door is wide open...

I am extremely grateful to you but have to say that the GUI is malfunctioning.

Cheers

Anyway, if I was correct about your backup plan settings - they are too aggressive if you at some time have only one backup that is not subject for retention rules. As for errors about failed mount operation - they never were too meaningful and giving a straightforward troubleshooting directions.

You are right about the retention plan, I had an issue with available space on the NAS device meaning there was insufficent space for multiple copies. I will create more space or exclude some stuff from the backup plan, adjust those settings and endeavour to keep at least two backups.
The cleanup aspect of backups was one thing I had real problems with, for a long time it seemed simply to not work. I deleted and recreated a number of backup plans trying to get the cleanup to work only to have errors in a week or two when the backup device filled up with backups that should have been deleted.

I will wait until the next full backup is taken and see if that can be mounted.

Thanks again for your help.

There is a bug in 'simple' scheme - if you change retention rules after the plan is created, they do not run automatically, but work if you run them from Backup Plans page. Custom scheme is free of this bug.
