File I/O Error message bypass

Thread needs solution

Hello,

New here and trying to get things working before my daughter heads off to college. We use a Seagate USB drive for the file and complete system back-up. My question pertains to the file back-up, which is scheduled daily at 5:00pm. If the USB drive is not attached we get the "File I/O Error" which is expected but if it's plugged back in, a new back-up won't take place (even for days) until I manually select "retry" or "cancel".

Is there a way to avoid having that error message hold up everything until it's manually selected to retry or cancel? I don't mind skipping a day if the ;ap top isn;t connected but I really don;t want to have her select "cancel" every time she has the laptop connected to the USB drive in order for it to work.

Thanks in advance, Peter

Using Acronis® True Image Home 2009 on Vista Home Premium 64

One way around this would be to untick the option of (I can't recall the exact text) running task if missed. The next scheduled task should continue.

I don't have 2009 on my laptop at this moment, but I think this is how I resolved that message.

The option I see in the scheduling section is:

"If Missed, run the task at startup"

That was checked, I unchecked it ....we'll see what happens.

Hello Peter,

Thank you for using [[http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/products/trueimage/ | Acronis True Image]]

If the task fails, please make sure that you are using the latest build of Acronis True Image Home (#9796). If the build number differs from the latest one, please download and install the latest build. You can learn more on how to download the latest build [[http://kb.acronis.com/content/1642 | here]].

Thank you.

OK, I feel stupid :-) How do I find the version level? Usually there is an "About" or "Version Level" or "Check for Updates" in some menu pulldown but I don't see it anywhere.

 Point your finger at the ALT button on the keyboard and prestomagically the HELP\ABOUT option will appear on the menu strip.

Well this didn't resolve the issue, still sits at I/O Error message waiting for you to acknowledge before it will run another scheduled task.

I have the same issue with Acronis True Image build 8,203.  We run backups to a NAS device, which normally work, but recently a backup job stopped due to an error message that said there was no space.  There was and is plenty of space on the drive, but for some reason Acronis thought there was none, and displayed an error.  The next six jobs did not run due to this error message not being acknowledge.  This is a pretty serious flaw, how do we work around it or fix?

We are running on Windows Server 2003 32-bit

Heard the following:

"This doesn't help at the moment, but beta2010 (at the moment) has the capability to auto run when the drive is re-attached, with choices of any attached drive or a specific drive. Also if the laptop sleeps during an imaging session, it can now restart when the laptop comes out of sleep. However it makes a second continuation file in that case.

Of course these features may not make it to the release version."

Well I'm using True Image Home so who knows if that will be considered for home use. But think about it, how many people are backing up (for home use) to a drive that's always attached and always available? Not many I would guess. Having Acronis basically die because of it and not work until you reboot or manually cancel is a real problem. I may have to look into another program (that runs under Vista 64). My daughter can't afford to loose her college documents because she wasn't dilligent about going into her task area and click "cancel" on the Acronis icon.

 The issue for me is that I look after a number of sites so I'm only in 2 days per week, and in this instance, no backups were run off this server for 6 days.  Also it is a very important production server so I'm not very keen on installing beta software.

Hello all,

Thank you for using [[http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/products/trueimage/ | Acronis True Image]]

Gareth,

I have the same issue with Acronis True Image build 8,203.  We run backups to a NAS device, which normally work, but recently a backup job stopped due to an error message that said there was no space.

.

Could you please clarify the similar features? Do you mean that your NAS device was temporally unplugged? Also, could you please obtain the log file of the failed operation and attach to your next post?

- Start Acronis True Image;
- Select Tools -> Show log;
- Choose the log entry which contains errors;
- Click on the diskette icon, choose the location (folder) and save there;
- Attach the log.

Peter,

Actually, the current version of the program doesn't allow you to have a scheduled task that will place the archives to a storage that sometimes is plugged and sometimes is disconnected during the operation start. There is only one exception - the USB sticks, but not the USB hard drives.

You can overcome the issue in the following way: Create a manual task and run it when the USB HD is attached. You can start the task very easy, for example, you can create a batch file and place the file to your desktop, to run the task you should just make a click on this file (i.e. on the icon).

Thank you.

Well this is for a college student, so expecting them to remember to do a manual task is not realistic. Not having USB drive suppoer for a home use product is a bit narrow minded .... IMHO. I just learned that Seagate (FreeAgent Go drive) updated their software to support 64bit OS so I'll be using that for daily file back-up, and just stick with Acronis for the full system protection.

I have the same issue as reported here.

I have several overnight jobs that back up different locations on my PC. If the backup disk fills, the job sits there waiting for me to enter a reply to the "Retry, Ignore, Cancel" dialogue.

This has a knock-on effect that the remaining jobs queue behind, even though there would have been sufficient disk space remaining for them to complete.

To compound matters, the dialogue box is only visible by double-clicking the ATI running job icon on the task bar, which is easy to miss. This means that the next night's jobs hang (in queued state) as well.

The ideal behavour would be for the job to simply fail and move on, deleting the incomplete backup that has been taken, and allowing other jobs to start. I have all the jobs set to email me on failure, so I will be notified and can take whatever corrective action is required.

I had thought that the "Backup Options\Error Handling\Do not show messages and dialogs..." option would do precisely what I want, but I have it checked, and it still behaves as described above.

Surely there should be an option for unattended overnight runs that actually works.

I am using ATI 2009 on Windows XP Pro.

After a generally good experience with ATI (not perfect, but OK), I have recommended the product to a number of my customers, but some of them are getting the same issue and the result is that their backups are not being reliably taken.

Dave.

EDIT: Just noticed that I've posted this in the wrong forum. Should I start a new topic in the TrueImage forum?

Hello Dave,

Thank you for posting your question, I will be happy to help. Please accept our apologies for the delay with the response.

You are unable to enforce the program to continue to work if user interaction is required. Silent Mode will not help you in this case. The only way to overcome the described issue is to prevent the destination location from filling up.
You can set the desired options in the Backup Method window.
When the Remove old archives box is selected, creation of a new full backup in accordance with the specified backup policy results in deletion of the complete old backup chain – the old full backup and its subsequent incremental (or differential) backups regardless of the overall limitations you set on the archive at the Automatic consolidation step.
Please see chapter 5.3.4 Backup Method of User Guide for Acronis True Image Home 2009 available  here for more information.
If you decide to keep old backups (by not selecting the Remove old archives box), you can apply the Automatic consolidation step (see 5.3.7 Setting automatic consolidation)

Please let us know the results, we should be sure that the program runs flawlessly. If the provided information is not clear or if you have any other question do not hesitate to post them and we will be glad to answer.

Thank you.
