Sysprep - Do you need to run only if original machine is still used?

Thread needs solution

I understand that there is a problem with duplicate computer names and SID etc.

However, if I'm just taking the source machine and transferring it new hardware (using Universal Restore) and never using the original again on the network, do I still need to run Sysprep?

If you're not using the original machine again you don't need to use sysprep (at least from the tests I've conducted).

Otherwise, if you use the right settings in B&R you should still be able to get away without using sysprep though, even if the original is still used on the network. There's an option in B&R (though I haven't explicitly tested this one) under: Recovery options > Settings > Change... > Additional Settings to change the SID.

And you should be able to change the computer name etc once the image has been restored (...though that may cause some Active Directory headaches for a little bit, if the new machine is reconnected to the network prior to renaming it etc).

Hope that helps,

Jarrad.

I'm just using Acronis to upgrade machines to newer hardware so the original machine wont be used again but will be replaced by the upgraded one.
