While investigating your issue, I found this article in our Knowledge Base. Please try out to create a snapshot using your vSphere client. Choose the option to quiesce the file system and run the snapshot. If this fails, please first uninstall - and reinstall the VMware Tools on the affected guest system. If this does not solve the problem, then please contact VMware support to solve this snapshot issue.

If you need additional assistance, please contact Acronis support. You will find more information about in our Customer Handbook.

Acronis launched the Acronis vmProtect 8 Beta program. Feel free to participate.

Hi Ethem,

Which version of ESXi are you running? You need to use 5.1 for Server 2012 support.

In the vSphere client, try to take a snapshot of the VM and see what happens. It sounds like when Acronis attempts to create a snapshot, ESXi is unable to do so.

Hi Andrew,

Im running Vmware ESXi 5.1 Essential Version.

ello Again,

I could take a snapshot, and Vmwre ESX 5.1 Essential Version. But it fails

Hi Ethem and Adeyinka,

While you are running different vmProtect Agents (in Ethems' case its Windows Agent and in Adeyinkas' case it's Virtual Appliance) the root cause of the error is the same:

Message: Awaiting task 'CreateSnapshot' has failed. Reason: SOAP fault code: '28', Description: 'No Data', Detail: 'get host by name failed in tcp_connect()'.

This is a general SOAP API error returned from the vSphere itself. It means that vmProtect Agent could not resolve the IP address of the ESXi host where the backed up VM resides. Typically this happens when the ESXi hosts are added into the vCenter by their names and you register vCenter in vmProtect: this means that while backing up VMs from that host, vmProtect will try to contact the ESXi host using its name and if name resolution fails you'll get this error.

There could be 2 possible reasons:

1) DNS server is not configured on Virtual Appliance in network configuration (in virtual appliance console). To confirm that the name resolution works properly go to console of Virtual Appliance in vSphere client and switch to command line (Ctrl+Shift+Alt+Space+F1, then Alt+F2). Then issue 'ping [hostname]' to check the connectivity. In case of Windows Agent also ensure that pinging the hosts via their names works properly.
2) vmProtect Windows Agent is installed on Win2k8+ with IPv6 enabled and the names of the vCenter/ESXi hosts are resolved to IPv6 address instead of IPv4 which is unsupported by vSphere API. Solution is to add the addresses and the hostnames into %windir%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts files to force the hostname->IP binding.

P.S. You can also check the following article in our KB: http://kb.acronis.com/content/36435 . Check solution #2 which while is supposed to resolve a different error, but it is also applicable to your case.

Thank you.
